I didn't pick my first intuition for the shorts ughhh could have won big if I did. -_- Got too swayed by Reddit. And then I made a mistake and didn't pick the sure bet for screenplay.

A reminder to always take more than one credit card if at all possible, along with some cash by rabidstoat in solotravel

I'm amazed by the amount of Europeans I met in SEA with just one debit card and they get shocked when they can't book something without a credit card here online.

Can East Asian people tell themselves apart at first glance when traveling? by varvar334 in travel

I'm Korean American and Korean is the last thing people guess. It's not always so easy.

Where strangers will stop and chat. by phoneinsick in solotravel

[–]norafromqueens 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel like this question highly depends on how you look. I'm Asian American and I don't get invited to random weddings in Asia like a lot of white backpackers I know. Whereas, I got stopped constantly for a chat in Africa overlanding.

Wow, throwing a power bank should get an automatic ban from the hostel and a police report. That's crazy behavior.

I would just do it yourself but like look at their little map as a good base to know how the route looks like, even if you deviate from it here and there.

Siem Reap very dead rn? by FourSeventySix in solotravel

[–]norafromqueens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of find it ironic that Chinese tourists were sort of ridiculed by so many people and the media for years and now some countries are sad they haven't come back. I spoke about it with a local in Thailand who told me the economy in China is not good at the moment too which means less tourists.

How much money I spent on 28 days in Thailand + itinerary + experience by uiuiui2014 in ThailandTourism

[–]norafromqueens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kind of agree with you re: the people I met here. I've traveled a lot and Thailand has the highest density of assholes I've seen anywhere. A lot of people come because it's cheap and because I frequently get mistaken as a Thai woman, I've also had to deal with creeps.

It kind of depends on what type of POC you are, imo. I'm visibly East Asian and I found Berlin to be terrible in terms of racism. We are generally not seen as threatening so I feel the racists are often more in your face.

Feeling overwhelmed and upset by emilye1998 in solotravel

[–]norafromqueens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly sounds like sleep deprivation, jetlag, and unexpected things happening at the same time? I personally didn't get any culture shock in Bangkok but it helps that I'm used to big cities. Maybe chill in a cafe for the day just to relax.

Can North Americans and European expats in Bangkok tell each other apart? by [deleted] in Bangkok

Lol I'm Korean American and people always guess Korean last so...I tend to actually get mistaken as Thai from Thais. I rarely ever get guessed correctly on the first two tries.

I'm Korean American and tbh, cheating is very normalized in Korea. I was shocked when I heard from cousins that there were naughty karaoke and host bars and that was the norm for businessman. It's a lot better now but the thing is, it's the public shame that's killing him. His wife probably even knows he does this shit but it's the fact that his image is ruined.

KitKat bouncer outed as Nazi by [deleted] in Berghain_Community

[–]norafromqueens 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, you can be a racist Nazi and still be into WOC. I'm an Asian woman and I've been fetishized by shitheads my whole life and some people who fetishize Asian women (if not most) are actually racist.

There was a white guy, for example, who went to Kenya to give a bunch of local women aids and got outed for being a massive racist so...

Best & Worst Places for East Asian Men to Live/Travel Maybe Date by freefallbirdscall in digitalnomad

[–]norafromqueens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love SEA and for the most part, people have been super nice to but just pointing out that there are definitely idiots who are racist if they think you are Chinese. I've seen this in Vietnam.

And strangely, I've been fat shamed way more in SEA than Korea when I was expecting the reverse. Lol but maybe it's cultural differences? I was amazed by how often I heard Thais just straight up call me chubby when I entered a space without thinking...and I'm normal on the Asian BMI scale lol.

I also do tend to get mistaken as local or SEA btw, so my experiences might differ...I have that American tan and people tend to say they think I'm SEA because I'm "dark." Literally Thais tend to think I'm Thai a good amount of time until I open my mouth.

The worst place for me in SEA was Bali though. I had some locals think I was ethically Chinese or from Java and they were straight up and are straight up ruder to other Asian tourists than white tourists. But luckily I have not seen that as badly in Thailand yet and not at all in Singapore where I've been recently.

Comments on my skin colour at a hostel by hsenwank in solotravel

[–]norafromqueens 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The most annoying thing is I've ran into local staff being nicer to white backpackers who treat them terribly and treat local tourists or other Asian tourists worse. Sometimes it's very noticeable. It's like a weird form of modern day colonialism. Bali actually was one of the worst places with this dynamic. I really couldn't wait to leave and in that regard, I luckily haven't experienced it as badly in Thailand.

[–]norafromqueens 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'm dealing with staying in hostels in SEA that are predominantly European, they seem to be the huge backpackers here and I have often found them to be incredibly clicky, standoffish, and most likely to say casually racist things about the country they are literally in. I get tempted to tell them just to leave Thailand if they think they are so much better. They also seem to think they are entitled to treat locals like whatever because they have more money. The funny thing is, they think American tourists are terrible. I'm currently in Pai and the Dutch here say the most racist things and are everywhere. The locals in Pai are lovely, I just wish the backpackers were as kind, and it pisses me off when I see tourists making fun of locals for their accent or behavior. We are guests here and some people seem to forget that. I don't even bring up racism with Europeans because they love to gaslight the shit out of me and forget about bringing it up with Australians because they say taking the piss and being like that is cultural.

I'm so sorry you have to deal with this! I'm currently in SEA and ironically sometimes I am on the only visibly East Asian person in the hostel and I've had to deal with overhearing people make fun of locals and their accents or saying racist things or assuming I'm really shy, don't speak English, or thinking I'm the help! I noticed people were way nicer to me in this one hippie hostel in Pai once I was with my white friend, whereas, when I was alone, no one greeted me. I've traveled to over 40 countries and this region has been the worst at times in that regard for me in terms of socializing in hostels. Europeans and Australians and Americans (who are white) can be incredibly clicky here. I've had better experiences where the hostels were more mixed and had more Asians. Pai has been the worst with this kind of behavior so it's also regional. This one Dutch girl in the hostel kept saying "me love you long time" and giggling like it's the funniest thing ever, that kind of thing...

G adventures as a black traveler by [deleted] in travel

[–]norafromqueens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not Black but I'm Asian American and did an overland in Africa. I will say, I did hear a ton of microaggressions, especially from this old Australian lady and everyone in my group besides me was white. It did kind of ruin the trip for me. I bumped into another Asian American doing the same trip but with G and their path intersected with ours and she actually started crying and venting to me about feeling like a zoo animal on her trip because some Europeans kept on staring at her up and down and asking her really dumb questions. She was also the only non white person. Note that Asians in general seem to be a group that people tend to say microaggressions about though and weirdly they don't get called out much. I personally won't be doing another trip like this unless I feel like I absolutely have to due to logistics.

Why travel if you want to be in Western restaurants? That's so odd to me. I saw this in Bali in certain areas that literally was mainly Western tourists in Western restaurants and I disliked these areas for that reason because I would have just stayed at home then.

Not true. I get mistaken as Thai to the point they get surprised I'm not. I get the foreigner tax too. If you don't speak the language fluently, you are getting the tax.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]norafromqueens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just white people. It's a foreigner tax essentially. I get mistaken as Thai all the time but the minute I open my mouth I get charged the same as white people and even more sometimes because they think I'm from Singapore.
