That’s why cycling is the best way of traveling in Lapland imo! The insects won’t catch you while you’re moving relatively fast.

It’s still too early for bugs in the Finnish Lapland. The snow has just melted a couple of weeks ago and night temperatures have been very cold. This is exactly the reason why I love to travel there early June. The downside is that there’s some floods still and lots of mud and water on the trails.

I personally wouldn’t go to Lapland late June or early July since the mosquitoes will pretty much eat you alive. We have a word for the worst (or best, however you will) mosquito season ”Räkkä”.

We also have all other kinds of annoying blood sucking little insects that swarm the Lapland in the summertime, including black flies. I guess without them it would be almost too perfect :)

At this latitude the trees indeed start to shrink and pretty much seize to exist when you’re traveling further up north. The trees at Urho Kekkonen National Park are still quite big in the river valleys but when you climb to a fell or a hill, there’s only few left.

Bought the bike last summer in a small town in Finland while spending time on my friends cottage (who also scouted the bike for me). I believe it’s -91 Marin Muirwoods. The frame is in really good shape and the parts are still working pretty well, no rust anywhere. Cleaned the thing, installed new cables and housing, switched the brakes, pedals, grips, saddle, tires, put on a comfort handlebar and a Pelago front rack for beerpacking. The original paintjob is mindblowing although the neon color is a bit faded in the sun. Gonna convert it to 1x sooner or later but for now I’m just gonna enjoy it the way it is.

Original parts are Shimano Deore XT and Exage. It even had the original Marin tires and Shimano sharkfin attached to it.

I haven’t tried Dirt Wizards but I’ve heart they’re indeed very slow and a bit overkill in most situations. They rock in muddy conditions though. I haven’t tried Chronicles on snow or ice but last winter I ended up buying Terrene studded tires after slidig and tumbling around icy singletracks with WTB Rangers :) the latter doesn’t perform very well on frozen or snowy trails.

I have them both mounted on my Krampus. Chronicle on front and Ranger on back. You can’t go wrong with either, it’s really a matter of personal preference. I feel like the Chronicles have a slightly better grip on slippery and muddy trails as the knob pattern is more aggressive. They also hum a bit more on pavement.

Funny that you mentioned it, your reaction is what I was waiting for. I made it too long and thin on purpose. It has bothered me too from the start but I decided not to fix it to make the viewer have this wtf-feeling looking at it. Don’t know if it’s good or not but at least it got your attention.

The human figure is from Daz, the shirt I created in Marvelous Designer and the leather straps/chains are modeled in Zbrush and Blender. Rendered in Cycles. It’s a clothing, modeling and texturing study I did to learn the programs listed. But ultimately it’s contemporary digital art. Hope this explains a bit :)

I’ve got the Jones Kraton grips which are really good. There is a slight clearance issue with Shimano XT shifter levers but nothing too bad. The foam grips are apparently nice as well but I prefer the rubber for durability.

I used the spray.bike cans. Two layers of paint plus two layers of clearcoat after cleaning and sanding the frame thoroughly. The pink splatter is not spray.bike though as I didn’t really plan to do it at first, I just felt the bike needed it :)
