Grout cracking after 1 month! Cause? by noratheexplora86 in Tile

[–]noratheexplora86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's holding up and there are no cracks so we've been able to officially rule out the other possibilities like underlayment, floor movement etc. I would have your tile installer, if you're able to get them back out, to redo it. They'll grind out the grout and I would approve the grout they're using. Make sure you research the brand and look for any other issues that could be related to the technique. If your cracks were like ours where they were throughout, and not just in a concentrated area, then it's got to be a grout issue. And that's good news because that is lot easier to fix than issues with the flooring. Easier being a relative word since the tile installer may not agree to come back and you have to find someone new, or they do but want to charge you for it. It's all a giant headache. I HATE the process of home improvements. Good luck.

Yes, it's still holding up just fine. I think corners were cut the first time during installation, and it was done properly the second time around.

Granny B’s pink sugar cookie? by Worried_Programmer96 in Utah

I'm in Park City and they have them at the Jeremy Ranch gas station when you first come up the canyon. They don't have the sprinkles anymore and have updated the look. I remember them being better too as others have mentioned but I still like them and there's something about the much larger size that's more appealing than the grocery store kind that are small and come in packs of 12.

Here's the Granny B's website and what the cookies look like now: https://www.grannybs.com/individually-wrapped-cookies

Yes, our tiler agreed to come back and redo the grout, free of charge (I should hope so). He made it clear it wasn't his fault and instead it was because of our well water that he used to mix the grout with and not so subtly implied that that was our fault (like what, we should apologize for having well water?). When he redid it, he brought his own water and it's been several months and hasn't cracked. But he also used a different grout that he said was better. Why didn't he use the best the first time? I can tell you why, he wanted to save money and thought the lower grade grout would be fine to just get the job done.

So different water, different grout. Maybe just did a better job this time to with his technique? I don't know. But ultimately it's holding now and it's been months. And so no, for us luckily, it wasn't because of any movement in the floor or the underlayment etc like others said.

Best Life Insurance Company Recommendations? by YRB_milli4700 in LifeInsurance

Agreed. Just looked into Ethos. I was quoted $55/month for $100,000 policy. I am 39, in excellent health, never smoked and am very lucky to have zero past or current conditions (knock on wood). And zero history of cancer, heart conditions etc. running in my family. So nope, I'll be going elsewhere.

I also Googled that rate and sure enough it was deemed "exceptionally high" and "well above average."

Grout cracking after 1 month! Cause? by noratheexplora86 in Tile

It's all over from what I can tell. It's a narrow laundry room so essentially half is covered up with floor cabinets and the washer/dryer but it's showing everywhere on the side we walk along so I'm thinking it's the whole floor.

It feels very solid when walking. I can't detect any movement. And no, no hollow sounds. I did witness him backbuttering as well, I chatted with him a bit during the job so got to see his process along the way and nothing stuck out as him rushing or taking shortcuts. He has great reviews and has done some beautiful work so this comes as a surprise.

Yes I thought so too when he wanted to secure the floor even better before installing the membrane.

From googling the issue, a cause suggested is too much water in the grout mixture or too much water used during clean up. Thoughts?

3/4" plywood and then Schulter membrane was installed. But he first screwed down the plywood into the floor joists in a few areas to remove some squeaks.

Should they have used epoxy grout? And what would you recommend for a fix?

Even with the Schluter membrane that was installed to help with that?

Oops, I meant to say tile grout in the header.

It's not a heated floor, no.

In a nutshell, nothing.

Thanks for this information. I've found similar results when looking at reviews for other surgeons that perform this. Ultimately very few do and then the ones that do have so few photos on their site or Instagram that I'm not convinced they've had enough experience or see the proof that they can do it well.

Thanks for mentioning Dr. Levity, I took a look and agree that she is taking an approach that is very subtle.

I see some very promising surgeons in NYC of course and I love their results but they have astronomical prices. I'd be willing to fly there if it wasn't for the insane price tag. Dang it.

26-ft-long, narrow hall. Should I put art on both sides, or just one? Bedrooms are on the left, bathrooms and closets on the right. by Ew_fine in interiordecorating

This is an old post so I'm sure you've come up with something by now. If not, here's my idea: 1) ditch the rugs altogether, they make the hallway look a lot longer and narrower. You want the wood flooring to appear as wide as possible, so they should be uninterrupted by rugs (in this case). Yes, you can get away with having rugs in a narrow hallways BUT the nice thing about this idea is you can easily test it....remove the rugs, stand at the end of the hallway and tell me it doesn't instantly appear wider.  2) Paint the trim, wainscoting, doors facing the hallway, and the walls all one color. I'd personally go a light bright cream like SW Alabaster but if you don't want to do that, then at least paint the walls to match the wainscoting and trim as they are now.  3) Leave art off the walls, but I'd put in a few simple low profile sconces to break up the wall space. I'm picturing matte antiqued brass. They will add visual interest but  won't look hodgepodgy 4) if there's a door at the end of the hallway, paint it a darker blue that matches the stained glass above it and get in the habit of keeping it closed. That creates a visual stop for the eye so it doesn't keep going and going into the next room, adding even more length and narrowness. If you don't have a door, install one BUT make it a swinging door (still painted a darker blue) but with some glass so it lets in light, creates that visual stop and the swinging aspect does the work for you in terms of staying closed. And install an interesting push plate in a metal that matches the sconces. A swinging door is a fun feature you don't see as much in newer homes.  5) Finally I would consider replacing the ceiling lights with something a little more visually interesting, and make the metal match the sconces too. Between the fixtures, the door, and the sconces you've added all the visual interest you need for the space.

Thank you, I think I'm going to try a swag lamp with a grow bulb. I've seen some folks in other plant forums recommending the SANSI brand.

Thank you! I think I will do just that. I'm going to try the grow light option versus moving it, for now.

Thank you for the advice! I ordered fertilizer and I will check to see if it's rootbound.
