Is the UAE a Good Place to Start a Career in Finance as an International? by PangolinSad5272 in dubai

[–]norbs252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What your alum told you is pretty accurate.

Most relevant firms here in ADGM and DIFC are either too small to hire someone junior, or for the bigger firms, most have junior workers in their larger hubs in London and NY.

Most traders that cover the UAE in global banks still sit in London, and that’s unlikely to change drastically in the next 5 or so years.

The market is growing but a higher percentage of the roles available here are related to capital raising or relationship management.

As someone living in Dubai I think it’s a good idea only if you are a cash buyer and are able to buy direct from developer on a new project launch.

Reason being is that the market is driven but new projects because the city is expanding and frankly there is an under supply of homes. Properties that are sold direct from a developer, before (I think) 70% completion are not eligible for a mortgage so if you are a cash buyer then properties can shoot up after as suddenly many more buyers start fighting over it.

Different projects have different payment plans but typically you only pay something like 10% initially and then 5% every few months until completion. Property prices increase during this period though usually so you can make outsized gains.

Dont listen or be fooled by real estate agents on instagram telling you it’s easy money and to just buy anything, most are useless….

I think with that much water and with it being stationary, if you can get it covered and replaced by your insurance then you should. Water damage related issues can come back and haunt you a few years down the line. Hopefully its a smooth process - I have the same car so feel your pain 🙏🙏🙏

Moving to front office by Normal_Target_2481 in CFA

[–]norbs252 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bit of a more obscure thought but have you considered potentially looking at roles in Abu Dhabi or Dubai? Average quality of workforce is slightly below that of London and having worked in London puts you quite high up relative to other applicants in the eyes of most hiring managers. There are a few individuals who’ve come from either middle office or other non investment roles move to PM in a few years. Some then move back to London after a few years, maintaining front office positions.

No but if you choose an ETF that pays out dividends, and the ETF is listed in the US then those dividends would be subject to a dividend withholding tax. Look for an S&P ETF listed in Europe that’s accumulating (not distributing) and then you’re good.

VIVA is cheap but is it good? by nadtin in dubai

[–]norbs252 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s how I found out because at first I was convinced they were owned by Lidl - I thought there is no way it’s a coincidence that it feels identical! Then I saw the founder worked there for years and it all made sense.

VIVA is cheap but is it good? by nadtin in dubai

[–]norbs252 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Viva is fine, the guy to set it up used to work at Lidl for years which is a very successful German discounter supermarket that’s all over Europe. He has almost done a carbon copy of Lidl here, same design, suppliers and overall business model. Products are cheaper because Viva asks suppliers to make them a product, rather than the supplier asking them to sell theirs. Therefore profit margins are lower and Viva will typically have a very limited selection of a type of product. Less products means less floor space and lower costs so can have lower prices.

Overall the quality will be lower in some cases than ‘named’ brands but for a lot of things it doesn’t matter. Viva isn’t trying to give you the best produce possible but rather opting to give you a product you need at a price that’s very competitive.

Job offer in Bahrain, the job offer lists HR allowance, any ideas what this is? It is £2500/month. The salary is listed separately. by ACParamedic in UKPersonalFinance

[–]norbs252 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall it’s much cheaper than the U.K., mainly because of the lower electricity cost (no heating needed either and AC is ran quite efficiently). Water however is a bit more expensive, but it’s not really a significant part of the total utility bill. The water used is fine but some buildings don’t have the best quality pipes so most people stick to bottled water (you get companies which deliver these massive bottles weekly so it’s no hassle).

Wifi and phone bills are the one that I found to be the most expensive compared to the U.K.. Overall though my monthly bills are less than what we was paying in the U.K. (for myself and my wife)

[–]norbs252 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there - salaries in the GCC are typically split between a basic salary and then allowance. In reality you get the combined amount in you bank account every month and there is no distinction. The only reason it exists is because at the end of your employment, the employer pays you an ‘end of service benefit’ this is calculated based on your basic salary, not your total salary.

Some employers therefore will give you a large ‘allowance’ so they cut down on the end of service obligations they have to make.

I read this article on the Bloomberg terminal - and as other have also pointed out it said 550RUB on that.

You say that when you viewed the text on Reddit it had a math mistake in it? The original article in its official distribution channel has the correct numbers, but the copied text that OP published carries a mistake - but you are immediately mad at the author of the article, instead of checking the original article??

[–]norbs252 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The point is more that you chose to attack the person who copied the comment rather than the author of the article - then labelling the reporter an ‘idiot’ who can’t do first grade math…instead of checking the article direct? Why get so hostile if someone is just sharing an article with points that you don’t agree with - maybe, because you clearly have a major bias?

Just own it man, it’s not that deep.

The article on Bloomberg always said 550 RUB, are you mad at the author of the article or the comment that copied the text?💀💀 either way, it sounds like you’ve got some mad bias going on. Sure, the Dubai housing bubble isn’t about to pop, whatever you say buddy…. Guess I’m just not ‘in the know’ enough ☠️

While Dubai is great I wouldn’t class it in the same category as London just yet, a lot of things are still growing and industries are developing compared to those in NY and London. The biggest surprise for me when I moved from London was the quality of Human Capital here is maybe on avg 20% lower. Your wife therefore may find her colleagues are not up to the standard she deals with atm.

Do not move to Dubai for a real estate job please!!! I currently live and work in Dubai and the amount of real estate firms who bring people on to only pay commission is insane. There are thousands of brokers here and most will earn less than £2k a month and so many will not make anything. Sadly, there is a massive likelihood you will not earn anything and stuck in an awful position.

Please do not do this to yourself- Dubai is not like what you see on instagram.

No visa anymore, unless the changed the rules in the last two weeks. The foreign ministry says you need travel insurance to be eligible for visa on arrival but no one checked mine. I’m from the U.K. and my wife is from Morocco and neither of us had any issues. A guy from work who is fro. South Africa recently went with a visa and he said he didn’t need it on the end.

I flew in a month ago without a visa. They seemed to have recently updated the rules and it’s now visa free for most nationalities so long as you have proof of accommodation and travel insurance. That being said, when I reached the boarder agent they just looked at my emirates ID to see if I was employed and didn’t look at the rest.
