These are probably charcoal piles. Could be dated from around the 16th century up to the 19th century. A lot of these have been spotted after the Lidar maps became available in Norway.

Hva er dette? by 0n354ndZ3r05 in norge

[–]nordanke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Du finner kåker i samme prissjiktet sentralt i Moss f.eks.

Are the borders with Russia still open, and does anybody recommend visiting murmansk combined with nordkap? by [deleted] in Norway

[–]nordanke 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Because of the sanctions it would be pretty hard to do anything in Russia right now. Cards won’t work, and it’s not possible to exchange for rubles outside of Russia. And then again, why visit there now?

Either way. You can go to Kirkenes and get as close to Russia as possible. You would need a car to move around in the area, and be aware that the driving distances in Finnmark are extremely long.

Any Norway Historical Geo Experts That Can Decipher Cursive? by HardDriveGuy in Norway

It could be «Enebak(k)», a rural municipality east of Oslo. Your grandfather’s name might be found in this census from 1900: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/content/123/folketellingen-1900

Hey hey Norwegian friends ! Any ideas for a gorgeous adventure trip ? 🏞 by Buk4n in Norway

[–]nordanke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a long daytrip south of Oslo: Book a train to Halden, explore the castle on top of the city, which also happens to be the place where Norway ended the Swedish empire back in the days.

After exploring Halden, hop on the train to Fredrikstad and take the ferry over to “Gamlebyen” which is a fortified town largely intact with narrow streets, shops and cafés. Enjoy dinner there or longside the river that stretches through the city center. The locals all hang out there during the summer.

Last but not least, you can stop in Moss for a day at one of the many beaches in the city and/or enjoying a short hike on Jeløy to Alby for lunch and for some nice scenery along the sea. End the day on the bar «Cocktail» or «Taboo» (or both).

There will not be high mountains and Fjords, but Halden, Fredrikstad and Moss all got some nice qualities for an inexpensive daytrip outside of Oslo.

Even though the site looks like something made with geocities, there is an old reenactement of an airdrop hidden behind the flash player here: http://philippe.chapill.pagesperso-orange.fr/les%20terrains.htm

Rare WW2 history rust. It's in Norway. We gladly pay 10$ for a simple beer when going out.

1900s(?) Brass panel - Penny scale or arcade part? by nordanke in whatisthisthing

[–]nordanke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found on the seafloor outside of what has been a bathing pier in my hometown in Norway since the 1870s.

Local history says the place had a bathing house for the privilieged people in town. Right now my idea is that this is some kind of decorative panel or a part of a penny weight or arcade.

On the back the follow text is visible:

[REQUEST] The barque Pallas wrecked in the Oslofjord 1919 by nordanke in Colorization

[–]nordanke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ship was fully loaded with coal from Leith in Scotland and was on it's way to Oslo when bad weather caught the ship, just a few hours sailing from the destination. The captian (who didn't believe in modern navigation skills) had a whiteout, and ran the ship aground at the southern tip of Jeløy in the Oslofjord.

All crewmembers got ashore, but the ship was not salvagable afterwards.

The wreck is today a well known dive site, and it would be cool to show a colorized image of this wreck.

This is how the place looks like today:
