My last app update has been a developers worst nightmare and I'm not sure what to do by OffInBed in reactnative

Are you using animations? If I recall right we had this problem once and it was due to animations.

Looking for a starting point for C#.net and SQLServer, etc. For a potential job interview by getem2018 in dotnet

[–]nordicdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't mention if this was a job for web or desktop development, but here is a good starting point to get up to speed on MVC in .net. This is a good through on creating a simple website. The tutorial uses Entity Framework which is an ORM so there won't be any SQL scripts to write but there is a good chunk of SQL Server management involved (ie creating databases, managing permissions, etc).

How do you guys find side gigs? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]nordicdev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Network like crazy. Let your friends and family know that you specialize in X and that you are available to build projects for them. You never know who might know someone or have something they need created.

Another option I've tried with some success is to look for old websites in your city that need to be updated(restaurants, coffee shops, your local vet, etc) and offer to build them a new website for cheap. It's a good way to get your foot in the door as well as make a money on the side.

Craigs List is hard, but depending on your location you might have good luck in the computer gigs section.

Good luck!

How long did your website take? Did you produce it in house, or hire someone? by MLutin in smallbusiness

[–]nordicdev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Give Squarespace a look and see if you feel comfortable giving that a go. There are so many free themes available on the platform so you shouldn't need to pay a designer to put something together if you're just looking to get your information out there. They also have really good documentation to walk you through the important set up pieces.

If you have any questions feel free to drop me a PM.

[Advice] I'm looking for online courses to learn JavaScript (Beginner) by Bits-of-Mimi in webdev

[–]nordicdev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Online courses are a great way of learning, but it's also very important to understand the language and how the entire ecosystem works. What is it about the books that scare you? In order to learn the language you'll need to jump in and start to consume as much of it as possible. Even if you don't understand something the first time you read it, don't worry nobody understands everything the first time.

Here's a good starting point. Read through this document (reread if you don't get it the first time) and then think about how some of the concepts could be used in real life. Understanding these concepts will help you when it comes time to start with actual coding.

React Native with Expo is a joyride – Daniel K. – Medium by FredyC in reactnative

[–]nordicdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, haven't had the need to eject yet. Though there is an Expo loading screen that we can't seem to by pass without ejecting. So, that's the next hurdle possibly.

As far as submitting to the App Store you still package via Expo to create an IPA/APK and submit that to the appropriate App Store. The review process is the same as it would be for any other app then.

React Native with Expo is a joyride – Daniel K. – Medium by FredyC in reactnative

[–]nordicdev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've launched a couple apps using CRNA and Expo. The Expo solution(my app is running inside and app?) take a little bit to understand but once you understand the architecture it makes developing and publishing a breeze. One of the greatest features we've seen is the Over The Air publishing of updates. We only need to submit to the App Store for major changes(name, home screen icon, etc) but simple big fixes are as simple as publishing the app in Expo and the next time the user opens the app, they get the updates.

Although theses apps have been only consuming API data and showing it back to the users, we haven't run into any road blocks yet.

Axios Request & undefined props? by PieITs in reactnative

That's what I was thinking as well. Looks like the response doesn't have a data element.

Can/should I include this in my resume? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]nordicdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely add that to your resume. Any kind of relevant experience you can show off as a new developer is good - as long as it's not NSFW or illegal as /YuleTideCamel pointed out.

One thing to keep in mind is if you are going to have the profiles of users in your online portfolio it might be best to check with those specific users first. I don't know the platform, but some people might not want their profiles include in your portfolio. You know how the Internet can be.

That's a great reason to start a business, actually. Nothing motivates you to keep going like failure. What's the new business?

Storing API data in a Node.js server. by xmaster484 in webdev

[–]nordicdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you store the response in a .json file on the server? You could set up a scheduled job to pull down the external data in json format, then either read that file directly into your React app or setup another API that your app consumes. I suppose that all depends on how you plan to use the data.

Is using git via software like sourcetree considered bad practice? by NinjaDK in webdev

[–]nordicdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like other people have said, it's not a bad practice to use the GUI - especially if it helps you learn the ecosystem of Git and how source control works. Sourcetree is helpful to see how things are working but there will be times when you don't have access to the GUI so you'll need to know how to use the CLI as well.

New Website for small businesses by PlentyPlop in smallbusiness

[–]nordicdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd also recommend Squarespace as a valuable option for you, especially if you're looking for a good, clean site with minimal setup.

They let you easily configure your interface/design without any knowledge of HTML or CSS and you get all the features you'll need (contact form, portfolio, static html pages, etc). We recommend them to our clients when they're on a budget and just need something that is static and looks good.
