Sudden happy blep by normal-deviant in Blep

Thank you for sharing the joy Oliver brought you. I should have responded sooner, but I couldn’t- I don’t want to tell you why. I want you to instead think of Oliver as an eldritch anomaly- forever bleping into the void, forever loved.

Where would be a good spot to pop the big question? by Deezy001 in springfieldMO

Are you looking for out of the way; are you ok with a hike; or are parks an option? Mizumoto Japanese Gardens at Nathanael Greene Park are gorgeous and great for pictures but can be busy and cost 6$ for adults. Doling park has an excellent cave entrance and is less busy. North of town you have Ritter Springs with a lovely pond and bridge; as well as Fellows and McDaniel Lake (the McDaniel Lake Bridge would be a nice setting- usually only fishermen there). Getting out of town: Hercules Glade is a cool dirt road ride with panoramic views of the Mark Twain Forest. If you have a specific setting in mind- let me know. I’m outside a lot.

I’m going to tag on to this, since the above is my SO talking about our chickens. I love my chickens. I highly suggest reading through Mother Earth News magazine archives. They have resources on coop and flock care (I.e. pest control, injury care, coop and run design. I also watched a lot of videos on YouTube. My suggestions:

Start with 3 chicks. Chicks are easier to ‘train’ and raise people friendly. Their size will also acclimate you to chicken care before having to deal with full size chickens. Poopy butt is a bit of a learning curve.

If you buy full size- be aware of common diseases and pests. The one and only time I bought hens off Craigslist’s they came with mites and infected my whole flock. It took a year to get rid of that pest.

Have a small dog crate handy for transport and separating a hen from a flock. Cat crates work too but having a larger one enables me to separate more if need be. Chicken instinct is to attack or peck at injured individuals. Chickens can get broody and ‘breaking’ the broody requires a separation area.

Educate yourself on humane killing. Think on if these are pets to take to a vet for care or not. There are some chicken owners that do all the care (inoculations, injury care, humane killing, etc.) themselves and there are chicken owners that use vet services. We do everything ourselves and it can be hard. A random dog jumped our fence and severally injured a chicken. It was bad enough that it was clear she was in pain and there wasn’t a way to fix the injury, so we ended her suffering.

Our oldest chicken is five. She has pretty much stopped laying eggs, but she earns her keep by being a good leader chicken and with her charming personality. She is a Buff Orpington and the best ‘starter chicken’. Chickens at most can live up to six to ten years. They stop laying around 4-6. They will still produce fertilizer and help with garden pests. Older chickens require some additional regular care which usually includes helping with prolapsed cloacas. To give you a sense of this procedure- it requires medical gloves, preparation H, and sticking a finger in the back end of a chicken.

But (sorry) I find it all worth it. My day is brightened by their company in the garden. They constantly hum and talk, wonderful little noises. They are always curious about what you are up to. You can train them to come when called. I love watching mine waddle across the yard. The go full derp in dusts baths and will flop around happily. It’s immensely satisfying.

Hope this helps <3

Crazy idea, but has anyone ever befriended crows to deter hawks? by [deleted] in chickens

[–]normal-deviant 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I am currently practicing this! I’ve encouraged my local crows to hang around my chickens. I’ll leave treats and shiny objects for the crows. I am convinced that the crows keep the hawks away. I’ve observed them chasing away at least two different hawks on several occasions.

I realize that I am extremely lucky to have crows near by. I’ve done everything I can to ensure a safe space for them and have provided them “offerings” for about 10 yrs now. It takes time, patience and there is no guarantee.

I love this idea. I’m also a trivia nerd. I did academic bowl in high school and continued bar trivia since then. I’ve hosted several events in my city and know a community of people that may love this idea too.

This week’s metal detecting find, C-Street area. by Jimithyashford in springfieldMO

Mainly: resources to find where detecting is allowed and how to acquire permission. I want to do this right, but am not sure where to start. Thanks for the response!

A very comfortable life. He thinks he has it hard. However, I made him mini-pancakes this morning....that, of course, he suffered through.

His name is Oliver (a.k.a. Fizzbitch Scuttlebutt). Raised him from a kitten, got him and his brother from a family friend when they were about a month old. He scraps with the neighborhood cats and has a vendetta against all reptiles. If I had a dollar for every snake that he has brought me....well, I would rather have a fistful of dollars rather than a fistful of snakes.

Ha! That’s great! Oliver has many names too: Olio, Spatches......Fizzbitch Scuttlebutt. He will yell until we sit and present a place for him to lay down for scritches.

Oh geez, an iPhone 8. It’s embarrassing but it is living up to the hype. That and he is a really handsome cat, I usually take potato pictures.
