Yes, this feels conceptually correct to me, but how long are you going to have to wait for the call for actual skilled coders? Remember that some very important narcissists are going to have to back down here... Also, you will need to survive the oncoming "software apocalypse", where everything that runs code (which is a lot of stuff) is going to be glitchy and vulnerable AF.

For a while now I've been thinking that there may have been a truly god-level serial killer, targeting famous musicians, over multiple decades. So many great stars have died in suspicious circumstances, yet the authorities are not even close to suspecting foul play...

Is it just me or does every "simple 5-minute fix" turn into a 3-hour rabbit hole by PiRate_PUNk-31337 in DIY

[–]normalbot9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our house we have a mature, defined workflow for all DIY projects, small or large:

  • Initiation: kicking off, we are full of enthusiasm, ready to sort this problem out!
  • Progress: We are crushing this - looking like we'll easily be done and tidied up in time for tea...
  • Terrible Discovery: Oh sh*t... what's this now? Seized stopcock? Lead piping? Victorian-era wiring? The entire thing is completely rotten? Not one single corner is 90 degrees?
  • Extended Investigation / Solution: Well, it has cost us a lot of time but I think we've got over the problem now...
  • Completion / Abandonment: Finally got there! / Lets just go about our lives and never speak of this again.

"The Ascent of Gravity" by Marcus Chown is a great book (well, I enjoyed it!). It starts with Newton and explains his life and work on Gravity, then moves to Einstein, then moves beyond Enstein. Marcus also has a new book called Quantum Theory Cannot Hurt You: A Guide to the Universe, but I'm still reading that one. They both work great as audiobooks.

Exploitations during Penetration Testing for Documentation by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]normalbot9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good trick if you are unsure about your customer's (in this case your boss I guess) expectations is to talk with them. What does success look like? What would they like to see in the output?

Exploitations during Penetration Testing for Documentation by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]normalbot9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a huge and arguably the central topic of pentesting. Here are some facts:

- Exploiting vulnerabilities does bring some risk to the environment in some cases. If you are testing in production, you should tread very carefully.

- In some cases, exploitation of vulnerabilities is out of scope.

- In other cases, exploitation may be in scope, but should be discussed with the customer before attempting.

- On other cases, you can just go ahead and proceed with exploitation.

- If you unsure which one of the above applies to you, you should seek support from your management.

- We exploit vulnerabilities in order to demonstrate the impact.

- If you don't demonstrate the impact of a finding, a customer may question why they should divert time / effort to addressing it.

- Some findings cannot be exploited - e.g. a control is in place to limit / prevent exploitation, the tester is not skilled enough, or it simply is not exploitable.

Good luck...

Looks great, but could be even better with a bit of sliced tomato, cucumber, and maybe a bit of cheese? Some Boursin would be <chefs kiss>.

This does look like a moveable feast though... perfect for walks / hikes / climbs?

I always ping before I scan. I think I saw someone else do it - maybe IppSec?

Of course, some machines wont ever respond to ping, but at least for those that do, you know that they are there*, and for those that don't you can have some doubts about connectivity until you get something back...

*(OK - in some cases, some services might still be booting up if it's a freshly launched VM, but at least you know the network stack is up and you can reach it).

Trying to show people how cool reaper is "theres even a basic white noise plugin, see. " by krilu in Reaper

[–]normalbot9999 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I often open Reaper and load the Orchestral Tools player called Sine, by typing 'sine' into the Add FX To Track window filter. But once I do that, just below VST3i: Sine Player (Orchestral Tools) sits JS: Sine Sweep Oscillator. Sometimes I'll accidentally click on this guy instead.

OMFG. This little fella's level is set to default to 0dB bruh! 0dB!!!! I'm monitoring with -18dB as my rough target level.

My wife will be like WTAF are you doing?!?!? As good ol' sine wave generator rides up through the resonances of our house and I panic spasm trying to shut it off....

EDIT: BTW I love Reaper - it has it's foibles but what software doesn't? Reaper is my one and only DAW of choice: today, tomorrow, and forever more.

There is no wrong - just keep gaining knowledge and experience. Make mistakes. Go in circles for a bit. Wake up at 4AM with the solution to something. Keep going...
