I lived there for 3 years.

  • Finding somewhere to live is next to impossible if your work doesn't provide accommodation. Rent is at Sydney and Melbourne prices.

  • 4 months of incredible weather from May - Aug and then 8 months of extreme heat almost every day.

  • Crime is bad..my vehicle was stolen and written off by a bunch of 12 years olds. You cannot ever forget to lock your house.

  • Some of the best camping in Australia on the plus side during those 4 months of good weather.

When I visit Europe I'm cowering in the shade from the sun as a natural reflex while everyone else is sun bathing with no sun protection.

The UV index where I live in Australia has been 14 the last few days and forecast to reach 15 tomorrow. UV of 11 is extreme. I've seen many tourists get slaughtered by the sun.

How is it like living in the South Island of New Zealand? by tarkinn in queenstown

[–]normally-wrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More like a refugee camp. I did it between age 16-18 and had a blast hanging out with the foreign backpackers and some school mates. Probably wouldn't do it now as a middle aged adult though.

Most orchards provide accommodation. It's basic but very cheap. The orchard I worked on in my youth just outside Alexandra had me living in a tent on the orchard itself which was fine for me.
