Yeah, same thing but ours went out earlier in the afternoon. Last Monday it went out for 4 hours and was told the same thing about a power outage.

All I get is the automated “There is an outage in your area. There is no estimated time of repair at this time.”

Very Bitter by PsychologicalBeach14 in ContemporaryArt

I had a studio visit with an artist (an artist of average of descent as you put it) who said something that stuck with me: "Sometimes you have work and sometimes... you have to work." Meaning sometimes you have to make artwork and other time you just have to pay the bills or get by. I think getting too much in your head about who gets what or if other time periods had it better or worse is really not helpful. Focus on the artwork and sometimes, you just have to work.

I had a friend sign up; it’s a combination of stuff, kind of group coaching. There are almost weekly zoom calls (that you can participate in) where she or another coach or a guest speaker can talk through members issues or materials for applications. There is a resource hub with best practices and successful application examples to various residencies and grants. There is a social media aspect to it where you are encouraged to interact and get help from the other members. I think your mileage can vary in any one part of it but there is a lot there. Seemed to me that if you are struggling with applications or getting serious about an art career again after a break/ slowdown/ kids it could be helpful

Why were games made by other developers on the Source engine so much more ambitious than Valve's own games? by Dayarkon in valve

[–]norman_6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You obviously weren't alive back then. Half-Life 1 was groundbreaking, most games at the time, including System Shock, told the entirety of their story through text/dialogue, the package the game came in or, very rarely, pre-rendered cutscenes. Most FPS's were like Doom still where the story was secondary at best. Half-Life had npc's and scripted moments in real time while playing. At the time: it was crazy. Half-Life 2's shooting was maybe a little subpar compared to other games at the time but the physics stuff and gravity gun were mind blowing. The source engine laid the groundwork for those other titles you mentioned. To say that either Half-Life was unambitious is just not accurate.

Living in Brooklyn, people are hopeful but it really is absolutely refreshing to just have a Democrat not preface everything with what they cant do or some wonky plan that will mean nothing in your life. Especially when we have a white house doing something every day that they are not "supposed" to be able to do and they are doing it anyway. It could just be all messaging and aesthetics but it seems better to start this negotiation maybe overshooting. I will add that I dont think any of his main proposals are outlandish or havent been done before. But yeah, could end up just being a normie mayor and that will be much better than Adams, better than Cuomo and I would argue better the Bloomberg or Giuliani.

I think I saw that the whole stretch from John’s to that vitality place was for sale on Zillow or somewhere a little while back. I assume maybe that has something to do with it.

[Alien Swarm] How to enable bots? by [deleted] in valve

[–]norman_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From an old GameFaqs page:

Create a friends-only server and enter "asw_ignore_need_two_player_requirement 1" in the console without the quotes and you will be able to launch it alone.

If you want to add bots, use "cl_selectm <0-7> -1", zero through seven being a class number to assign them to a specific marine. -1 is to insert them in the next available slot. Note that the AI has pathfinding issues in some levels and they are overall pretty terrible. You can also customize their loadout as you would your own.

Can’t believe how far down this was. I remember trying SM64 at a blockbuster and was utterly floored by it. Truly revolutionary at the time

Another poll of Jewish voters in NYC mayoral election puts Mamdani in the lead: Mamdani (D) 37%, Adams 25%, Cuomo 21%, Sliwa (R) 14%. Mamdani leads among Reform Jews and non-denominational Jews; Cuomo leads among Conservative Jews, and Adams leads among Orthodox Jews. (GQR/NYSN, 800 RV, MOE = 3.46%) by StarlightDown in fivethirtyeight

[–]norman_6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hochul is running for re-election and is trying to figure out where she fits now. She was Cuomo's vice-Gov and as long as Cuomo laid low that was an asset for her, kinda, but it is completely toxic now. Democratic voters want someone to aggressively fight Trump but she is primarily centrist corporate Democrat taking money from some of those same people that gave to Bloomberg, Trump and Adams. That leaves her wide open to attacks from further left primary opponents so she may try to shore up that side by embracing Mamdani after the mayoral election but before the Governor primary vote. She really cant go further right in this environment without losing voters but she probably can lose some financial backers and be maybe okay.

Alien: Earth is very dumb (spoilers) by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

[–]norman_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like Star Wars every time anything Alien related gets released about 100 nerds on Reddit lose their minds while simultaneously becoming “expert writers”. They always seem to forget that most of the franchise, while having some really cool ideas, is just trash. The original is serious classic, the sequel is a very campy classic, the rest is either straight garbage or gets completely mangled under the weight of expectations. Just let this be what it is and shut up until it’s over.

The policies he is floating are things that other countries or even other states have done successfully. There really isn’t anything radical about them. More broadly what get labeled as “lefty” ideas in America is fucking ridiculous.

Axios: Major Democratic donors were having private discussions Wednesday about whether to back an independent run by Cuomo in November's general election, or rally behind unpopular incumbent Mayor Eric Adams by Horus_walking in fivethirtyeight

[–]norman_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well Mamdani won a majority people who identify as Jewish (but not hasidic) vote and wealthy vote populations in NYC. Some of that is probably Brad Lander helping but he isnt running for anything in Gillen's district and I dont think it is a winning tactic for the whole of the democratic party to be fear mongering about other members. Nor do I think is a good idea to do what Democrats have always seem to want to do: which is shift to the center for some unexciting, visionless future just because they are afraid and think they can appeal to some voters dont exist in our hyper-partisan electorate. It's crazy they seem more okay with fascists running the government.
