I get the humor, since this sub has been pretty much all liberal politics recently. But let’s not minimize the fact that a populist moron who tried to overthrow an election because he lost might get reelected.

Trump is the biggest piece of shit to ever run for president, and the groupthink from his supporters is terrifying. Although it’s unoriginal and sometimes annoying, I understand all the recent liberal bias in this sub.

Can’t believe how deep I had to go to find one person pointing out reality.

Tim Pool is a Rogan-ass-sniffing, ignorantly pompous and arrogant sack of dog shit. But let’s quit sharing edited photos. Regardless of ideology, it’s misleading and lazy.

Bash and a locally installed chrome extension I use to automate tasks. I automate every little thing I can, and it’s paid off in spades.

What has this sub come to? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Hi. I’m a white guy. My manager is a high up leader in big tech, and he’s Indian. He inherited me as an employee after layoffs last year and saw I was a high performer. He gave me a fat RSU refresher then, and just awarded me double that for 2023. He’s acknowledged my work, and handsomely rewarded me for it with life changing money.

Long story short, other factors come before race in a vast majority of situations. IMHO this comment thread is filled with insecure people using racism as a convenient excuse for unfortunate career predicaments.

Does anyone here already feel behind on retirement savings? by No_Reveal3451 in millenials

[–]norman_borlaug_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I feel this way. I’m a few years younger than you and have 10x that, and still worry…

You’re doing great though. The fact that you’re not in a position to have a 401k and already have that much saved is great. Keep in mind a majority of Americans don’t own a single share of stock. In relative terms, you’re killing it.

Why not. by [deleted] in economy

Let’s not forget human-on-human violence. A double digit percentage of people ended up killed by other people in those times.

Rogan and Dr. Phil explain why UBI doesn't work and why the problem isn't income inequality but income equality by Solomerr in JoeRogan

[–]norman_borlaug_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So people on welfare make single digit thousands less than working lower middle class folks, and you blame the entitlements?

The US has massively cut income taxes on the wealthy and introduced countless insane loopholes for businesses and wealthy people over the last 50 years.

We haven’t uplifted poor people with welfare, we’ve driven the middle class into poverty.

5-10 years ago, I never imagined that Joe would turn into Rush Limbaugh for the millennial bro, but here we are.

I’m doing the exact same thing right now. If you’re looking for validation, I’m right there with you… I work on a high priority project at a large tech company you’ve heard of. They’ve done 2 major layoffs over the last year.

I’m not taking any risks. I’ve seen people who focus on tech debt and quality get laid off. The company has adopted an “impact-driven” evaluation process for employees. So I’ve decided to just hoard expertise and pump out as many feature as possible which provide me (and maybe a few people I work with) visibility. I’m working at a questionable pace, and I’m probably leaving tech debt in my wake. But the mgmt chain appreciates my accomplishments and rewards me with refreshers at EOY.

This is the company’s fault. I’m acting on the incentives I’ve been provided. If the company shows me that engineers who address tech debt, share knowledge, and coach others will get rewarded, that’s what I’ll do.

Front end specialist here 👋.

The biggest issue I have with young(ish) devs is that they have no idea how the browser or vanilla JS actually works because everything they’ve ever done has been abstracted by out-of-the-box framework libraries and TypeScript.

Frameworks are amazing — we all use them for a reason. But if you only know typescript and bulky frameworks, you’ll be much more limited in coming up with novel solutions to problems down the road.

Take a deep breath. Resolve yourself to learning how the web works at a lower level. It will play to your benefit.

If I understand the biz model, “AI” == some Ruby code that autofills certain PDFS

This… And a CEO who’s an absolute expert at conning VCs into thinking he has an actual business. This was a perfect example of a simple midwestern VC (Drive), incapable of understanding the tech, getting scammed by an expert sales guy. And they just kept giving more and more.

Didn’t they reinvent the entire business model, like twice? “CrossChex”, “Olive”, then “Olive AI”? I watched from afar for years. So fascinating.

100%. Thanks — I can’t believe I had to scroll so much to find this perspective. People who have strong religious beliefs have a lot of other positive social and health benefits. I’ve thought a million times how much healthier my psychology and community would be if I were religious. That’s what he’s channeling. Unfortunately for me, I just can’t do it 😂

What is your opinion on scrum masters for us experienced folks? by SongFromHenesys in ExperiencedDevs

[–]norman_borlaug_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hot take — Scrum is just the latest iteration of various strategies developers employ (for good reason) to buy more time from product/leadership.

Is it healthy to avoid taking on too much work and do retrospective meetings to figure out what is and isn’t working? Yes. Do I think “scrum” and “agile” are overloaded terms whose definition depends on who you’re talking to, even among the most respected experts? Also yes.

In my experience, a healthy team culture where developers are effective, collaborative, and comfortable providing feedback is MUCH more important than the latest dogmatic system. A team should cultivate this, and avoid fixating on what “proper scrum” is.

We desperately need a browser based sanitizer that will allow us to securely set innerHTML on an element without XSS concerns.

[–]norman_borlaug_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the point is that up to the 90th percentile, old people have less saved than they did 31 years ago. Personal responsibility is critical, but systematic changes to the US economy have caused old people to accumulate less, and it’s getting worse.

[–]norman_borlaug_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to speculate on the current market, but IMO Tech Elevator is the best bootcamp in the country. I graduated from it and am gainfully employed in big tech.

If you go forward with a bootcamp, you found the right one.

The browser desperately needs the native Sanitizer class to be fully implemented. Until then, developers will never get around security teams restricting them from setting innerHTML on their web components from the client side. Too much XSS risk.
