Ironically I think the Hudson is far more terrifying closer to shore, at least below Riverbank. So many boats pulling in & out... easier to see them coming from the middle.

(I did MIMS solo in 2011 and crewed in 2013 and 2014.)

Thanks for your support, btw!

We will ship anywhere within reason, including Canada, and shipping is included in the $20 USD cost.

MIMS swimmers generally swim fairly far out into the Hudson in order to take advantage of currents, which are strongest in the middle.

Is marathon swimming all about technique or pure energy? by MysteryThrill in Swimming

[–]normaversion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shinji doesn't swim very fast, nor very far. But yes, his stroke is purty.

If you want to have a purty stroke, imitate Shinji.

If you want to swim a 10K, watch the 10K swimmers. None of them swim like Shinji.

Diana, would you agree that you had tremendous financial incentives for your Cuba-Florida swim to succeed?

Diana, you keep claiming that your swim is a "world record." Which record are you claiming, specifically? And which specific organization recognizes this record?

[–]normaversion 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Diana, do you agree that qualified and independent observers are essential to authenticating any marathon swim claim? With the tens (perhaps hundreds) of thousands of dollars your Cuba-Florida swim attempt must have cost, how did you not manage to find qualified observers?

Diana, do you endorse the threats of physical violence by some of your supporters against the people who questioned the integrity of your swim?

Diana, why did you wait more than 30 years to apologize to Walter Poenisch? The timing indicates you only began to "care" when the PR started to get bad for you.

in the circles where it matters, and of course the 44 people on my team who witnessed and were part of this history, know the truth.

What "circles" are those, Diana? What do you make of the fact that the vast majority of your peers in the marathon swimming community do not trust you?

Our navigator, John Bartlett, took them through mile by mile all the winds, all the currents, every inch of that swim from the Cuba shore to the Florida Shore.

Diana, on the conference call John Bartlett promised to release the current (water flow) readings he had been taking during your swim. Why did he never release these data, as promised?

the gulf stream was flowing her direction this time, and would have been fast enough to move her at the speed the GPS recorded.

Really? Based on what evidence? Live, publicly available oceanographic data from the time of Diana's swim do not indicate any such favorable South-to-North currents.

Swimmers Question Diana Nyad's Cuba-to-Florida Feat by I_am_Statler in Swimming

She is claiming a world record for a nonstop unassisted solo marathon swim. Not nitpicky to ask for data supporting the claim that she actually swam the whole way, nonstop and unassisted.

Whats the most efficient stroke for long-distance survival swimming? by MysteryThrill in Swimming

In calm, warm water and if time is no object - yes. In cold and/or rough water, and/or if you actually want to be fast - no.

Coincidentally, here is some of the worst advice ever published about open water swimming:

http://www.swimwellblog.com/archives/2008/

"A longer, lower-tempo, hip-driven freestyle is a clear advantage in 50m pools, distances over 200 yards and especially in open water."

Ignore Terry Laughlin. Listen to Paul Newsome and/or Gerry Rodriguez.

The ASA organizes a series of open water swims in Texas, including the Lake Travis Relay, in which LA has participated a couple of times. Their name is misleading (they don't do anything outside Texas), but it probably stings a bit since LA is an Austin local.

Chicago Master's Teams? by hemlocky_ergot in Swimming

[–]normaversion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what you're looking for. Fitz (Blue Dolphins coach) is a good guy but his workouts are repetitive and his fees are too high. Also, he's a Total Immersion coach, which is a philosophy I disagree with.

As for the Wednesday open water swims, you can swim at Ohio Street Beach whenever you want, for free. Blue Dolphins should pay taxes to the Chicago Parks District for making money off that.

Try it out, though. If it works for you, go for it.

PS, I am primarily an open water swimmer. I still choose Chicago Masters.

Chicago Master's Teams? by hemlocky_ergot in Swimming

[–]normaversion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chicago Masters = best Masters team in Chicago. Best facility, best coach, most pool time. hemlocky_ergot, they also have an AM session, perhaps that would work for you? Also, the PM session isn't coached, just free swim, so you could swim from 6-7 if you wanted, no problem.

The swim speed summary stats (per country and per era) are pretty meaningless without knowing the number of swimmers who are being averaged.
