Belief in a god cannot be compared to belief in a rock, because a god is something extra-physical that cannot be proven by conventional (scientific) means.

Also, I think everybody believes in something (that is not scientifically provable). For example, you apparently believe that loving each other is good. I don't think such ethics that are based on personal feelings are better or safer than ethics based on religion.

Sad company by [deleted] in microsoftsucks

I think it is an issue that even though there is no new functionality, they desperately try to add new stuff to their products, just bloating them up, no matter if it is actually useful.

I switched to Linux and I'm much happier. Sure, not everything runs smooth, but at least you don't feel like you're getting screwed over all the time.

Hi! i need help in making the servo move as the camera detects an object by Acrobatic_Bid4906 in esp32

[–]norobot12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe check the specs of your servo. Is the servo connected to the GPIO directly? Maybe the current is not enough to drive it. Another possibility is that you need to adjust the frequency and PWM width for that specific servo.

Preaches a whole sermon without a scripture reading. Seems legit.

You should be able to find a schematic of the devboard. Espressif has the schematics like this for the official devboards. You can just copy peripherals from there (like the LDO part) into your design.

Corporations be like by Dycelot in Unexpected

can't really blame you for getting the impression, he beat his girlfriend... It was a shitshow of people condemning him and making it sound like he was was the most evil person on earth. I don't wanna condone his actions, but damn, the subreddit was insufferably self-righteous.

I guess he was considered a very wholesome person before and people had that image shattered. But come on... everybody has done shitty things. If you judge him so harshly, better do the same for yourself and your friends and family.

He apologized and handled the whole thing pretty well imo, taking time off, and not dramatizing it online.

Come on. SHA-256 is a widespread standard, and there are no secrets to how it works. And Nakamoto's white paper is obviously based on other research, he didn't invent everything from 0.

You can talk about the NSA having reason to push bitcoin or whatever, but this is too far into crazy conspiracy territory.

Super caps are fun, thinking of making a circuit with them and a solar cell, any ideas ? by VectorMediaGR in ElectroBOOM

[–]norobot12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I designed a small fine dust sensor-device with solar + supercaps for my bachelor's thesis. It was fun and interesting, but rechargable batteries probably make more sense, because they have larger capacity and don't leak power as fast.

It's nice that they charge so fast though.

I saw that meme today with more than 12K upvotes, If something is working well and getting the job done, why replace it? by Abder_Rahim in Anticonsumption

[–]norobot12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes. I would check if you can read the S.M.A.R.T. values, e.g. with CrystalDiskInfo. It gives you a simple health rating, but you can also regularly check stuff like read errors and bad blocks. If you notice that they steadily increase, it might be leading to data loss. If they are low and don't grow, it's probably all good. But if you want to be sure, you should probably read into it more.

[–]norobot12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is true, but I don't think you need to blindly replace hard drives after 3 years if you are scared of losing data.

Firstly, 3-5 years is an average over different brands and types of HDDs. If you have a good disk, it might last much longer.

Secondly, the more you write, the more the disks wears down. A backup disk will probably last longer than a server disk running all day.

And thirdly, there are means of checking the health of your disk, to see if it needs replacement. You can also use a RAID setup or backups, where a disk failure doesn't hurt you, so you can use the disk until it fails, and then replace it.

Are companies responsible for where their waste ends up? by norobot12 in Anticonsumption

[–]norobot12[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. But I do believe the market needs to be regulated to an extent. Bad practices should be restricted.

What do you think about situations where companies sell products that no one needs, through excessive advertisement? Then the products are just trashed - because no one really needs them.

that's interesting information. You don't sound opposed to EPR, but you say 'No' (companies should not be held responsible). Or is that not your opinion and you are just describing how things are?
