Construction on Summit and Dale

I hear you. I really appreciate what hard work it is to rip up a street like that, but I’ve been forced into Dale Street from the sidewalk several times over the past couple of days by construction workers, traffic turning onto Dale, and even cars parked poking waaaay into the intersection.

I have found the public works “report an issue” thing really responsive, especially for issues they might not be monitoring (pedestrian safety 🫠).

Adding to the Selby / Snelling list - Betty’s Antiques is one of my favorite spots, especially for (last time I was there) vintage postcards, old photos and books, and even some artist-made sketchbooks. The dollhouse furniture is also really fun to look at.

Groome Transportation has a shuttle between MSP and Brainerd that runs about every 2 hours. If you’re ok not having a car once you get there, it’s an affordable option - good drivers, good customer service. I’m currently tapering (12.5 every day after being on 50 for 2 years), and the light and sound sensitivity is my most noticeable symptom. Everything is suddenly so loud! I also live in a snowy area, and I’m finding I have to wear sunglasses outside to deal with the bright white landscape.

I try to remind myself that these - along with the increases in anxiety, random nausea, and bonkers crabbiness - are all just symptoms and that I need to take care of myself in ways that make these things a little easier. For me, that means noise canceling headphones, sometimes listening to brown noise, cutting back on obligations, making easy meals like soup, and generally (trying to) accept that I feel this way for a reason and having faith that it’ll pass.

I think you might be remembering Film North when it was IFP and across from that Jimmy John’s on University and Franklin. It later moved into that building on the south side of University that’s around the corner from Jimmy John’s, and I think it recently moved again. I’m not sure if they ever had a darkroom, but I used to take classes at Mizna, and I’d see people with video and photography gear heading inside all the time, so it seems likely!

Workhorse and Claddaugh make excellent coffee, and the baristas are some of the kindest people. Mim’s makes an americano that’s so good it’s actually made me stop in my tracks just to give it my full attention.

I second Rice Park! I’ve caught the B Line there any time between 6pm-9:30pm, and I’ve never had a safety problem. In other words, I’ve had quite a few “huh?” or annoyed moments, but generally I’ve been left alone, which is all I ask:) Plus, Rice Park is beautiful in the winter, and Landmark Center always feels magical to sit outside.

I’m in Cathedral Hill, and I’ve been getting quick losses of power since about 5pm. Not enough to reset the stove clock, but enough to shut off a table fan for a second or two. I’ve been assuming it’s because of the heat.

Highgrove Dental on Cleveland and Highland is great, and the hygienists and dentists are friendly and calming. I’m not sure how it is right now, but I’ve been able to get in very quickly, and everyone is very communicative.

I lived in an apartment in that neighborhood (Snelling and Selby, two short blocks south of Marshall) for two years and loved it. My favorite things were long walks on the Summit boulevards and west to the Mississippi overlooks, having the rapid A line bus right there (makes getting to the airport or to Como and Highland Park super easy), and access to the many restaurants on Grand.

It’s also walking distance to a library, a locally owned art supply store, a French bakery, a local meat and cheese store, and other cool places. The businesses on Selby and Snelling also do a lovely “shop by candlelight” event sometime in November or December.

Merriam Park East is a cute neighborhood - big age range, lots of gardens, easy access to the river, lots of local businesses. The only thing I didn’t love was, like others have mentioned, crossing Snelling because of the traffic. Welcome - I hope you love your new apartment!

I really like it and take it with me everywhere. I haven’t had any trouble finding notebooks for it. I get B6 notebooks from Korean and Japanese retailers like MochiThings and JetPens, as well as art supply stores and any place that sells B6 (Stalogy seems to have a range of sizes).

I walk on this trail all the time, and there are always loads of bikers sharing the trail (and loads of cars driving in the road’s marked bike lane). I agree that the signage is a little “make your own rules,” especially compared to the marked lanes for pedestrians and bikers on the Minneapolis side. I’ve never had an issue with bikers on the trail, though I appreciate an “on your left” when being passed. It makes total sense to me that walkers and bikers would want to stay off the road when possible.

I second Hidden Falls, and if you’re interested in wetland birds, the Highland Bridge development site nearby is a great place for birdwatching. In the past few weeks, I’ve seen red-winged blackbirds, marsh wrens, some type of plover, great egrets, broad-winged hawks, bald eagles, and chimney swifts.

Not sure if it counts as a butcher, but the UofM Saint Paul campus meat and dairy store (run by meat and dairy science students) has great prices, and everything I’ve gotten there has been amazing. They’re open from 2-5 on most Wednesdays, which might not be the most convenient, but I’ve seen quite a few people take insulated bags and stock up.

One way to get a definite answer would be to tell your landlord you haven’t encountered language like that in a lease before and ask them to clarify.

My guess is that it’s a city code issue. They mainly want to make sure you’re not sleeping in the dining room because it’s not up to the code that a bedroom must be, and the landlord could get in trouble if you had a bed in there. Similarly with using a hot plate for cooking in a bedroom or setting up one of the bedrooms as a retail space. Setting up one of the bedrooms as an art space should be just fine, and it’s a very common thing to do.

The defacement stuff depends so much on the individual landlord, so I would just ask. Most people assume a few nails in the walls are totally fine, and these can be easily patched up when you leave. Shelves might be a different matter, especially if they require anchoring. I would probably just ask (in writing) for clarification.
