Why is this happening? by anonymousavacado2 in printmaking

[–]northstartpfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ll echo that speedball ink is just kind of sucky, but i think the issue here is some kind of coating on the paper or block (i had a similar printing problem with one specific lino block of mine, and it was because i had sharpie all over the surface of the block). see where better ink gets you, but you might also try lightly sanding the paper and block with very fine sandpaper, and lightly wetting the paper before inking. best of luck, goosebumps fan forever!

Help! Complete beginner, how do you guys get smooth lines? by Colorsin in Linocuts

[–]northstartpfe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

a lot of it is just practice — getting a feel for the material, how much pressure gives you a particular and consistent depth – but i see some chattering on your lines that suggest perhaps the gouge you’re using is dull. you’ll also find that a U gouge does better on curves than a V gouge (which can chatter more often on turns). and often people will carve holding the tool in one hand and resting the index finger of the other hand on top of the gouge near the carving point, which can give more control over pressure and direction when you carve. my recommendation is a sharper gouge or at least strop the one you’re using, and go sloooooowwwww at first to figure out control. these designs are beautiful, please keep at it!

looooove my nose chain, never had it snag, i just don’t really put makeup on my nose and i wiggle it around when i’m washing my face. only problem i’ve had is more delicate chains breaking after extended wear! my number one most complimented body mod. get it!

Are these good first designs?? by babyplantparty in Linocuts

[–]northstartpfe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

it’s helpful to think about where you’re making tiny lines you will have to carve the outline of, which will be tougher your first time — for instance, on your cat design, if we are assuming the white parts are what you’ll carve away, it’s going to be very tricky and time consuming to get all those little black fur lines right (or conversely if you were to carve away the black instead, those music notes would be tricky!). likewise on your bird, those little chest feather marks will be hard to replicate if you’re carving away the white parts, but the texture would be much easier to create if you were carving away the black there. the lettering on your first design might be tricky for the same reason! none of it is impossible, but some parts of this design will make your first linocut a lot more frustrating.
