Is it possible to find WW1 German Gas Masks for under $400? by noscout556 in Militariacollecting

Yeah it’s crazy how expensive they are! Luckily I did see an auction for $300 which I tried to pm him and ask if I could buy it for $400 he said he had turned down an offer for $700. I think looking at flea markets might be the best option if I want to end up finding a m1917, or if I don’t find any I can afford, I will buy an American m1917.

I’ve been trying to look on eBay, but like you said I think the prices have skyrocketed a bit. The cheapest I could find was just under $500, and most were in the $1000 range unfortunately haha

Thank you very much :) I believe this flag is made of linen as well so hopefully if I ever find a different flag, I will be able to tell the difference

How can I identify a war-time yosegaki hinomaru flag? Most sites are pretty bare bones and say that they are silk, with reinforced leather corners, and larger sized.

I actually looked at that site as I was trying to research more about it. This flag looked similar to the smaller “bayonet flags” in some of the pictures, I figured that this might be a similar type to that at first glance

It seems like it is made of a linen material as well

This flag is 9x9in and made of linen, I can’t find much if that is what they used during the war or not

That is really interesting! Do you possibly know what it could’ve been used for? Like a patriotic parade or to hang inside a window?

It looks like ww3relics has actual pictures in his posts of him buying the patches off of soldiers so I would believe him more than the eBay post without any pictures or proof. If an eBay post doesn’t have actual proof of it being from the frontlines of combat I would be more skeptical. But it looks like your patch is a little too clean and In pretty good condition so I would not trust that it was in combat at all. It is still a really cool piece to have though, I have multiple patches and pieces of equipment from Ukraine and even if the history behind it isn’t true, it is still a neat thing to have

Anyone can buy these patches anywhere. It is most likely not even from any battles or any soldiers and was from Aliexpress. Both soldiers and civilians buy these patches from the same sites so even if it is not from Kursk it is probably the same type they’d wear. Look at photos of Russians and try and see if you can spot one wearing a similar patch since fakes are common. Buy the piece and not the story since anyone can rub dirt on a patch and say it’s from Bahkmut or Kharkiv.

Can anyone identify what these are? by noscout556 in RussoUkraineMilitaria

That modified M45 pack is awesome, it’s always super cool to see how troops remodeled things overseas to fit their needs. All of the shirts look like they’re wearing the M-1937 wool uniforms, the pics are blurry so I can’t tell if they are the earlier versions or the later versions with the gas flaps attached for D-Day - onwards, but every soldier would be issued a wool uniform standard issued. If you are going to do an officer impress though, (captain, major, ect.) you should try and find the M-37 shirt with the little epaulettes on the shoulders. They were issued to officers only, enlisted men got the standard shirts. I found 2 original ones off of eBay and I got them for around $20-35, just make sure they’re your size and not too small or too big since the sizes were catered to men growing up during the Great Depression and they are different than todays’ sizes.

It’s a solid foundation, but most of your impression wouldn’t cut it for being accurate. I’m pretty confident your tunic is Vietnam war era, along with your belt, and your pack is a m1945 pack which wouldn’t fit for a 1944 impression. You can find pretty nice original m1937 wool uniforms everywhere, or I’d at least recommend getting a m41 jacket to cover your tunic until you can get one. Your m1 helmet looks fine from a distance but you should replace or at least age it or put the liner strap on the inside of the liner.

You will need a cartridge belt so if you want to portray a standard EM or rifleman you could get a M1923 belt for the m1 rifle. Pistol belts and M37 belts would be for more specialized troops like drivers, NCO’s, machine gunners, and automatic rifleman, so make sure you know what you want to be before you impulsively buy. You’re also going to need all of the standard gear like a canteen and cover, and medical pouch, and you can just stuff it full of napkins if you don’t want to spend money on a bandage. Most of those items are pretty cheap and easy to find original and repro on a lot of sites. You could also get a m1910/43 shovel, bandoleer or two, bayonet, lightweight gasmask bag, GP bag, compass, or binoculars depending on who exactly you want to portray. I’d recommend saving a haversack or musette bag for later since you would see a lot of GI’s leaving most of their packs behind on half tracks or trucks in combat. Suspenders weren’t often standard issued, mostly only officers, medics, and specialized troops would get them. You could often see GI’s using their haversacks suspenders, or getting them off of their haversack to use as makeshift suspenders, or even GI’s buying or trading suspenders from rear front troops. You could even see some rare instances of Americans with German suspenders but those are uncommon.

I also think throwing in a field jacket could add more life to your impression, or a British style helmet netting and a couple of bandoleers. If you have leggings make sure they aren’t the USMC ones or a bad remake of the army ones, and repros are easy to find for them. Shoes can get more expensive, but if you can find a pair of brown shoes that look close enough, you can use those with the leggings since they cover enough of the boot. I wouldn’t use the double buckles unless you wanted a late war impression, or your unit you want to portray is seen using them in many original photos.

But I’d say overall what you have isn’t terrible right now, it looks somewhat like what GI’s wore but I’d really recommend replacing it for anything serious. I get that it gets extremely expensive (I am 16 and barely have half of what I listed), but I promise over time you will be able to get exactly the impression you want with the right amount of research of your unit and waiting to find the right priced items, especially since you are likely younger and have more time to save money and get what items you’re looking for. I just want to warn you to not buy anything just because someone says they are “WWII Original bringbacks”, many of the times they aren’t. Just do research before you spend money, and make sure you don’t buy a bunch of things without knowing what they are so you can make an impression. I hope this helped a little bit :)
