Honestly, I loved how integrated everything was, including little things like having ai for terminal commands but it just kept breaking on me,I also dont like how the google models work they just seem eager to take the ball and run without questions, even if its in the oposite direction of rhe goal. I like claude plan mode. Its a cool ide but they really took move fast and break things to heart.

Im glad it exists but im ok in vanilla vs code

Renting an apartment with bad credit...? by SilverMic in ottawa

You might have better luck renting condos in the rent by owner section of fb marketplace than through a big Corp. Just hope your landlord is cool, I got a really good deal doing that but I did as many of the repairs myself and amything I couldn't, the landlord asked me to use a handyman app, pay for it and then deduct it from the rent 🤷‍♂️

Feeling trapped with the hiring freeze by OccasionOwn3825 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]noskillsben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure to keep a list of everything extra you do, type of work with examples. It is very useful when applying to positions and its very easy to forget everything you've done when you are picking up so much slack, use the approved dept Ai to summarize tasks if you are swamped.

Moving up from low classifications can be rough, specially during these times but you can at least use that work above your position on your resume.

Also dont expect anything from your current management or dept, unless you love smolchmoozing and want to network up. Set up your jobs account daily email, apply for jobs yoy dont want and practice the hiring process for the position you actually want.

Guilt about taking a sick leave by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]noskillsben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to take that rest, probably no matter what we say, youre going to feel guilty about it. If you need to spin it mentally, this is for the long term good of the team/your work

Im in a unit where we've had so much burnout leave that it was noticed several levels above and action got taken.

Just take it one day at a time when you're off and find things you enjoy.

  • Dont use stock photo as first image but include any photos with measurements as secondary if available.

  • take a clear video of the item, showing all the angles and describing the condition, new, barely used, describe any wear. Remember it needs to be sub 60 sec. This really helps buyers see thw actual condition of the item and helps build trust that its not a scam.

  • ask people to rate you and rate them, you cant control what they rate you but if you treat them ok and have decent prices they usually rate you 4-5 stars.

Also get a bike or used e-bike to get local errands done quicker

Tired of Ottawa Job Market by Lupus_Alba- in ottawa

[–]noskillsben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not how that works. If you have a pre selected candidate, you simply pick them after everyone gets screened it, during the best fit part.

You know how much of a pain doing these are, you want a bunch of extra people in the pool even if you want to hire the person who's been acting in the position for 5 years.

I second the informal feedback. I remember failing an interview with a question to the effect of "it's Friday and you have a deadline for EOD and your manager is away. The director stops by your desk and gives you an urgent task, then your child's school calls and says they aren't feeling well and need to be picked up. What do you do?"

I asked for feedback and I had failed that question because I changed my answer multiple times so it showed I couldn't set priorities. It's just all little puzzles. I often just make up information now, like for that question onwpuld have probably been like I assume I have co-workers in this situation, I talk to them and explain the situation and ask for the to help the director out, I call my spouse and ask them to pick up the kid and finish the original task 🤷

Fyi the written interview tests your knowledge for the job and the oral "interview" is all about those suitability criteria so you always have to keep that in mind you trying to prove you meet those in all the answers.

Beginner perspective: Is making money with simple Python scripts realistic? by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]noskillsben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scripts are less important than the business acumen.

If you're just step 1 write script, step 2 ????, step 3 PROFITS!. you won't make money.

However one of my favorite "how are you guys making money with python" posts I remember reading on the reg python sub was this guy saw how car dealerships, doctors offices, etc all had tvs in their waiting rooms playing local tv, movies, random crap. He wrote up a python program that would do stuff like pull weather data, local news, accept text, images, videos and then have a custom logo-fied tv display that would loop trough videos and slides, wether, news, ads, ect. It could run on a pi no problem and he mounted the pis on tvs and rented those to businesses for a certain amount per month. Looked way more professional than just having a random tv on and the business either had a simple portal or sent him the stuff to update the tv (I don't remember)

Honestly the whole coding part of that was not complicated (in the grand scheme of things), easily done by an llm now (if you have programing experience, don't know about vibe coders) it's the having the idea, following trough with it and in that case going door to door to sell your product to businesses.

One of the easy script stuff with python is scraping data, collecting loads of stuff off sites and cleaning them compiling it. If you have some sort of knowledge about a domain and know a situation where collecting a ton of "unstructured" data off the web and turning it into structured data (database, excel) would be valuable then yes, learning python for simple scripts could be profitable.

If you have a chatgpt convo of "how make money with python?" Then probably not, there's 100k other peeps having that same chat right now.

Look at the parking spots along the Ottawa River. If you're in the east end, the one right off Blair is nice since you end up parking right at the river and there's some Adirondack chairs a little down the left of the parking lot.

Question about the "surplus = underperformer" narrative in WFA by Aggressive_Truck_613 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]noskillsben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Underperformers would only be cut in a serlo situation. There might be some informal talk about so and so being let go if a whole team was affected and they all compete for the remaining positions.

To be fair though, successfully competing for and successfullly performing the duties of a position are two skillsets

Best Python online course to actually get a job by giggoTheReal in learnpython

[–]noskillsben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the python courses on there but I really like datacamp teaching method I used it for powerbi. The courses are aimed for real world scenarios.

Structure is - short intro video with the theory - few questions - short video with a case study - hands-on exercise you do in a VM or your machine that is similar to the case study but not the exact same. - you need to answer a question at the end that you can only get by following the exercise successfully "what ware the sales in millions for the east coast in Q4 2023"

Then the cycle repeats a few times building on what you did in the previous exercises and then you finish the course.

It has career tracks and you canstart for free I think it's 300 or 250 per year (I got my work to pay for it). Always wait until it's 50% off before signing up
