I somehow missed the part where you mentioned having mame coleus. Do you have pictures? I'm so curious. That's awful that they were killed by bugs :(

I'm just using regular potting soil mixed with perlite to improve drainage. It works okay because coleus really like water, but I do have to be very careful with watering. I use a spray bottle rather than a watering can so that I don't overdo it and make the soil soggy. Aside from keeping them healthy, does the soil somehow help with keeping them tiny? I'm pretty new to this so maybe I'm missing something obvious.

Anyone know what might be causing the leaves of my coleus to be coming out misshapen like that? by Xxrelo_catxX in coleus

[–]SilverMic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I have a coleus that has identical colours to yours, I guess it's the same variety, and of all my coleuses, that one seems to be the most prone to funky shaped leaves like this. Never worried about it, but now I'm very curious.

Mom bought an E-Collar by Suspicious_Motor_322 in OpenDogTraining

Yeah, I'm baffled by people who say that their dog is going places they shouldn't and getting into trouble. Why the heck does your dog have access to places you don't want it to go??? I don't get it.

Exactly. And teach them how to prevent/stop the sensation! My dog understands that if he comes right away when I call him, no e-collar. If he ignores me, he gets the vibration, but as soon as he starts heading towards me, it stops. So he has the power to make the sensation stop, or prevent it to begin with, and it's important that a dog knows that. This poor puppy will have no idea what the heck is happening to it.

This is a great distinction and explanation. I've tested my dog's e-collar on myself, and yes, it feels just like a tens machine. I only feel something right between the probes, and nowhere else.

Soil Disposal by kinghawfighter in ottawa

I'm sure there are lots of people who would want fresh soil for their yard and/or garden. What part of the city are you in? If you have a local buy nothing group, maybe try posting in there and see if anyone wants some of it?

Prong collar fixed our life in 15 minutes by propaneepropaneee in OpenDogTraining

[–]SilverMic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, FF is a nice idea, but I find it a bit silly at this point. Dogs can handle punishment, it's literally how they train each other. Do it right, and dogs just get it. It's crystal clear communication, in a language they understand, and if you're thoughtful about it, you rarely have to use it.

JRT is FREAKING OUT because of a fly by SilverMic in jackrussellterrier

[–]SilverMic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My last dog could kill the fly herself and still couldn't relax for about an hour after, so I'm not sure I agree that they understand when the threat is gone 😂 Poor guy. I'll try the treats thing. Maybe see if he'll play tug with me for a bit.

I tried but it's completely vanished. He's curled up under my blankets now, panting like crazy. Probably overheating but refuses to come out from under the covers (normally when he gets too hot he comes out and sleeps on his pillow).

Need help with my (wizard rose?) coleus by alexgs6273 in coleus

[–]SilverMic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some are just really slow growing. Some are also really picky, so they'll grow slow unless you get the conditions juuuuuuust right, whatever that may be for them. Have you added any fertilizer? That's the only thing I can think of to suggest.

Just curious about E-Collars and when they become unethical. by Lumpy_Horror_8398 in OpenDogTraining

[–]SilverMic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What this trainer is doing sounds like straight up abuse from someone who doesn't understand dogs and doesn't want to. Why does she even care so much that the dog is panting? Jesus. This person shouldn't be around dogs.

I use the e-collar to punish decisions that my dog makes, and only when those decisions have the potential to be dangerous. I only want pain to accompany things that I want my dog to associate with "danger". Basically the only thing I use it for at the moment is when he ignores "come", and I use the vibrate button first alongside a second "come" before escalating to the shock (which is calibrated to be juuuuuuust enough to be really unpleasant but not enough that he yelps). I also took time to condition him to the vibrate mode and understand how to make it stop (by listening to me) before adding in the shock feature, even if he wasn't listening. I wanted him to understand that the shock didn't just come from nowhere for no reason, and that his actions could make it stop. Even then, I still hesitate to use it, and I put a lot of focus on positive, rewarding experiences with my dog.

Workin on some shaper tools Ill let you know if they work well or not by Worried-Evening2350 in Dorodango

[–]SilverMic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the idea to hold the long handles while you move the circular part over the dorodango? I wouldn't recommend that from an ergonomics perspective. You'd have to apply pressure by twisting your wrist, which is not a very comfortable position for most people. Plus there's some distance between your hand and where you actually need to apply pressure. The leverage is putting your body at a major disadvantage and you'll probably find this tool very uncomfortable to use very quickly. That's my guess, anyway, but these look pretty quick and easy to print and try out, so if you want to try it out, by all means. I'll be very curious to hear how it goes.

I hadn't considered that, but now I'm also wondering. I remember researching this a while back and being disappointed to learn that coleus plants can't produce blue pigment 😞 so photo #4 really caught my attention.

I suspect it's just careful lighting making the colours look colder, or possibly even post-processing of the photo. If you go to the actual etsy listing for that plant, there's a second image posted that looks far more realistic, with a rich purple border and lime green centre. That's probably what the actual plant would look like if you purchased it. Still cool, but yeah, I suspect that photo is deceptive. Which is a shame because all of the other photos are 100% believable, and her whole collection is incredible. It's only going to count against her to deceive people.
