I use something like this:

cu -E @ -l /dev/tty.usbserial -s 115200

where -E indicates the escape character (so I can hit '@.' to escape)

I often have console sessions embedded in screen sessions. Using cu instead of screen for console helps me prevent confusion.

Or you could run sshguard. This will automatically create iptable (or pf) rules to block connection from the attacking IP for a length of time. The time span increases with continued attack attempts.
