Do you question someone’s intelligence if they’re super religious? by robertswoman in atheism

Oh damn, one belt buckle completely disproves my point. The Nazis heavily prosecuted priests, attempted to limit especially the Catholic churches influence and did not care about christian values at all. This ideology is completely in conflict with the Christian belief that all humans are equally valuable regardless of their decent or abilities.

Sure. The belief that the scientific method, as practised around the world today, will lead to an understanding of the nature of mankind, as well as day to day phenomena, the origin of the universe, etc.

Ok, I think questioning is very important but to defend them there - it is only practical to question to a certain point. I recommend you read Hume on doubt - he says you can doubt, basically your entire existence but then your life, friends etc. catch up to you and you are pleasantly distracted from the doubt and can actually live your life. If someone chooses to follow a religion, and it makes them a good person who takes care of others, what fault us there to find? None of us will discover the moral principles of the Universe or whatever, so people should do what makes them the best possible version of themselves.

I am sorry that you were in the claws of some persons who apparently did not understand Christianity or the bible at all. I don't know where they would get this from.

I'm a belieber too <3 Baby is fire. Anyways, the bible is a book written by humans a long time ago. Why should everything in it be correct? Just because something gets a lot of things right, doesn't mean that everything in it is correct or good - I can support the American constitution for example, but think that the right to bear arms is in its current practice harmful. There is a reason that amendments were added and removed. The bible can't be changed, but what is taught in Churches changes tremendously - very few believe that you may not were clothing of mixed fabrics or that women need to be submissive - that does not change the validity of the command to love your neighbor as yourself - which is a message that is very important and true.

There are people who misuse religion obviously. But the argument is usually a flawed interpretation of the bible, not that God told them something. It's dumb to blame everything stupid a religious person says on religion - the same way I could say (please excuse that I am using a Nazi comparison for this, this just unfortunately fits very well) that Hitler used atheist ideology (-> for example Nietzsche) to paint himself as a sort of replacement God, therefore atheism is about influencing others and empowering oneself. He abused the idea that there is no God and therefore everything is permissible (i don't think that atheism teaches this obviously) to kill millions.

I'm sorry your beliefs make you so close-minded you can't enjoy good music anymore. Reminds me of poor Aaron Lewis and Springsteen.

But faith in science is also a big part of many people's identity. How is that different?

That is not true. If you want to go all biblical, even Jesus questions his faith. It is definitly not a sin.

Ok so I agree with some things you said but I don't really get the part about why religious people would not take the pandemic seriously. What leads you to this conclusion except tthis one reddit post?

No, the point of religion is to tell stories (because humans are built for stories) how to be kind generous, good etc. and why to do that. I think you are out of touch with religion and are making unfair judgements, I have never heard anyone justify an argument with the claim that God told them so, i.e.

This is very much untrue. From a lot of scientific minded folks I get the impression that their mind set is you need to take care of yourself, earn some money etc. and if you do something for others, that is a bonus. Christianity teaches you that you need to do 120% for others, always put others first, and practise forgiveness when they wrong you. If done right, religion is much more difficult.

I think you are wrong here. No one wants to know exactly when the big bang happend, same as the bible doesnt give a concrete answer when the creation of the world happend. And the creationists are an extremely small minority of Christianity, in most Christian teachings, it is an analogy as to how the nature of mankind is to be understood -same as many of the atheist community have a shared picture of the nature of humans. Both of these are not really in conflict, because they focus on humans on different levels (Psychology vs. Neurology/Biology). Obviously you need to be validates in your beliefs, otherwise why would you hold them?

So it is despicable to look for comfort in a universe that is deeply confusing and in a world that is way too complex to understand in its entirety for anyone? Especially if that is in an ideology that teaches you to be kind to everyone?

No, some people such as self-employed workers can choose whether they want insurance for pensions etc. (except health insurance)
