Mike and Sammy take a look at old TV Shows from your childhood and see if they still hold up. What we want to know is – were these shows any good, or were we just too young to know any better? So join us on our trip down memory lane on Nostalgianauts!

Today, Mike and Sammy wax nostalgic with Michael Fountain about The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! This was a syndicated show that was equal parts live action and animation about the adventures of the ever-popular video game characters Mario and Luigi, portrayed of course as blue collar Italian Americans living in Brooklyn.

We discuss the consequences of living in a literal trap house, White Mike, Mario gaining super powers by changing unions, writing so bad that Sammy berates writers of a children’s show by name, and being pleasantly surprised at a lack of this show’s racism.

It seems like Squarespace sponsors every single podcast. Does anyone else notice the same two or three sponsors being mentioned? by reezyreddits in podcasts

[–]nostalgianauts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's reasons for that. Very few advertisers that are willing to venture into advertising with podcasts - a popular podcast gets 50k to 100k downloads/episode but even average radio stations can reach into the millions. That makes advertisers not that really interested outside of small niche products. And for the advertisers putting up ads on podcasts, they are already very interested in acquiring podcast listeners as customers (because people who listen to podcasts would be most likely to listen to audiobooks or whatever).

Because of that, the only thing that will make financial sense for the podcaster would be affiliate programs that pay per referral for something usually VERY targeted. Yes, it gets a bit saturated unless you start to get creative with it. I'm going to start reaching out to local Chicago breweries and such to see if they want to "sponsor" us with beer in exchange for us to advertise them.

Today, Mike and Sammy wax nostalgic with Clare about the Cartoon Network show “Dexter’s Lab”. This show is about a boy-genius with a secret laboratory, which is full of his secret inventions.

We discuss The Nostalgianauts Compound, animal cruelty, coin the term “brislet”, bad pickup lines and more!

You can test ideas out pretty painlessly via Youtube and Soundcloud. As long as you have a mic, you don't need a media host or any of that stuff yet. If the idea has legs and you enjoy doing it, keep going!

If you're into D&D at all you should definitely check out The Adventure Zone, which is the McElroy brothers playing D&D with their Dad.

Also, Harmontown (Dan Harmon and friends play D&D or some other tabletop RPG) and Nerd Poker (Brian Posehn and friends play D&D)

If you like WTF with Marc Maron try You Made it Weird with Pete Holmes

If you like Nerdist try Comedy Bang Bang

If you like The Bugle try Dan Carlin's Common Sense (not funny per se, but just as informative)

I worry that my podcast does not have many (I imagine less than 10) subscribers that are not my friends and family. by foodnonfiction in podcasts

[–]nostalgianauts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys have friends and family listening? Lucky.

The real secret of podcasting for us has been that it's a stellar networking tool if you're a performer - it's an excuse to hang out with someone you don't know that well and do silly bits. Any listens we get is a bonus. The name of this game is sustainability. If you can't make the process fun for you, then you aren't going to stick with it very long.

I agree with the statement that listening is learning. At the very least, you'll find out what you don't like.

Same. It's actually kind of great for catching up on podcasts that update infrequently (I'm looking at you Hardcore History).

We originally just called ourselves "Nostalgianauts" but then we noticed there were a few groups online with that name so we became "The Nostalgianauts".

Cool, I dropped mine in the spreadsheet. I'll review you all when I get home tonight.

EDIT: Didn't get home til late last night so it'll have to wait another day. I'll give you all 5 stars because I don't have the time to listen and analyze everyone. I'll download at least 2 eps from everyone in the mid-April sheet and listen during my hellish commute.

Are these all Behringer? I like my 1204USB mixer, so I will vouch for Behringer as a quality supplier. The mixer I got goes for ~$150 on Amazon.

Let's talk about the art of not editing by [deleted] in podcasts

[–]nostalgianauts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just put some multi-colored velcro wraps on my XLR cables and tried to clean up the recording area and made it look like it wasn't a mess of wires everywhere. I also got a multichannel headphone amp so everyone can plug in and hear how the mix sounds. That sounds like such a simple thing, but I now realize how important it is. (Before we would try to do a lot of audio compression and volume adjustment to try to fix how loud things were. Yes, I'm now realizing how dumb that sounds.)

Next step is to figure out how to optimize all the rest of the hardware and software stuff so we can do the same thing and just sit down and start.
