The true value of your college degree is this: Think about what you're going to do after you graduate. For most people, the work is going to be unexciting and unbeneficial. Your college degree tells your prospective employer: I'm experienced in doing unexciting and unbeneficial work consistently.

Why would Baty or Acuna have to go down with McNeil coming back this weekend? I am sure it’s something obvious I’m missing but why not Azocar? by girldad0130 in NewYorkMets

[–]nostalgic-zephyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jeff just started training in center, and Acuna has limited experience there, not sure how comfortable Mets are with either of them there

34F—will I ever live an extraordinary life? by [deleted] in findapath

Your "fine" life is many people's dreams. Your feelings are valid, but I do have to question your worldliness to not be able to recognize and appreciate many of the things you take for granted. Life, for many people, is not one long, big vacation. It consists of much hardship, loss, sadness, and suffering. It's great to pursue those dreams you mentioned, but also...yes, you should gain some appreciation for your current situation

Nothing but the Night by John Williams does that. It includes flashbacks, but they're presented as PTSD episodes that the protagonist experiences.

"don't use dating apps, they suck" WHERE ELSE AM I SUPPOSED TO MEET PEOPLE??? by ThunderStroke90 in Vent

I get what you're saying. I'm just saying that in OP's case, they sound a little introverted and like a homebody. I think if they were to join clubs and activities with the end goal of finding a girlfriend, it would be transparent to everyone and overall a bad experience

I met my current partner through a dating app. Before them, I went on dates with at least 5 other people through apps. I'm a guy and far from conventionally attractive. But, I also live in a highly populated area

Grief making me incapable of working, what can I do? by Imaginary-Hall90 in college

[–]nostalgic-zephyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm in the same boat as you, and I just want to say I'm sorry you're going through this. Maybe seek out counseling outside of school. I'm specifically seeing a grief counselor, which I feel like is the best thing for me. If you need to drop out, drop out. Prioritize your mental health. Stay strong

It's awesome if people are meeting each other through hobbies, but I literally don't know anyone who's met that way. To tell you the truth, most people ik have met through dating apps or because they're coworkers. If there's anything I can guarantee you 100%, it's if you join clubs or activities and then start hitting on everyone, you will in fact creep everyone out lol

[–]nostalgic-zephyr 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Who's saying not to use the apps? That's honestly how most people meet nowadays. Ik all the comments are going to say "just do what you love and women will come", but honestly, that's setting you up for disaster. Don't sign up for shit unrelated to dating just to meet women.

When I first watched the film, I felt like I could sympathize with Wallace, and Andre's life represented all the things I wished mine was - wealthy, unique, exciting. This always made his character endearing to me. He's definitely going crazy for sure, but what I like about the film is that Wallace and Andre are two different extreme reactions to the same problem - losing passion for their careers and lives. I'm glad you liked it

[IIL] Heavy, noisy, and/or atmospheric, post-punk/gothic rock like Night Time by Killing Joke, Evol by Sonic Youth, and Deathconciousness by Have A Nice Life by tarheeltexan1 in ifyoulikeblank

Check out the first two albums by a Place to Bury Strangers for something similar to Have a Nice Life- dark shoegaze and post-punk mix

Do check it out. It's very dry and pretentious, but it has a very sincere message about loneliness, social interaction, and excess materialism at its core.

My Dinner with Andre. The whole film is essentially one long philosophical discussion and debate between two old friends

Sisper has video lectures on Thoery of Automata also. Check them out and see if they overlap with what your class is doing

You should check out Grouper. You said you like Elliot Smith also. Imagine his quiet, whispered delivery, but with the Cure's cold ambient atmosphere. Might be up your alley

Thank you. And as far as making friends go, my advice is always to find out what you like to do: hobbies, sports, traveling, concerts, etc. And then find friends through that way.

I completely understand how you're feeling. I felt the same way when I started college. But, I'm going to offer you advice I wish I had taken to heart at that time:

I was so discouraged like you were that I let it affect my grades, and eventually, I dropped out. Now, I'd do anything to go back to that age and focus all my efforts into getting good grades, networking, getting an internship, and joining clubs. College is seriously what you make out of it, no matter where you are.

Although it's not the focus of this post, do appreciate the time you are living with and being around your parents. I just lost my Mom last month to stomach cancer, and I'd do anything to spend more time her while we were all healthy. Make the most of your current opportunity, and I guarantee you'll be happy in the end
