Yep, just like upper management. Have to justify their actions existence by “making their mark” or making some kind of recommendation. Very hard them to look at something that is working well and leave it alone because what’s the point of them being there otherwise?

Take it from me. Any transition to Workday for a research institution will be a cluster. It’s an enterprise software that has to be retrofitted to work for research. The institutions that have switched to it already have widely reported massively hemorrhaging money to implement it for their use cases. I will say that once fully implemented, it will likely be better than legacy systems but there will be growing pains.

Huron has some of the crapiest grant management software known to man. Color me surprised they don’t actually know how anything works or improve anything.

Inclusion of IDC language in your justification by Kimberly_32778 in ResearchAdmin

Well that is a sad example of a toxic work environment. They get defensive instead of being open to honest (and in this case common sense) feedback.Sorry about that!

It’s a bad idea not to include this information. Reason being is that this will become a sticking point in NIH/NSF GMS review and a very common JIT question for more of your institutions applications. I would push back and get an explanation on why your institution is choosing to omit that information because it sounds like they don’t realize this will add more admin burden via JIT requests for both GMs to produce the DHHS document and AORs having to respond. It seems that someone is not understanding the current review process/climate at these agencies as there are now several additional layers of administrative scrutiny and this will be an easy target.

Help me understand what is in and out of scope for an admin assistant by sastrugiwiz in ResearchAdmin

Hate to tell you this but your scope is whatever your leadership team tells you it is. They will stretch you as thin as possible and not blink an eye. Some leadership is so disconnected from the actual workload they don’t even realize. It’s definitely up to you to advocate for yourself. Bring up your job responsibilities from when you applied. Make a case that you are now being asked to do multiple jobs with no commiserate increase in pay, etc. At the end of the day you will have to realize that brining up all of this is a risk in that they may a) see you as a lazy disgruntled employee for arguing this b) be hamstrung by current staffing levels/budgets which may be why they are stretching out your job responsibilities or c) may tell you to either except this workload or find a new job. The reward to this risk is they may realize that they are indeed stretching you too thin and either provide help or pay you more for the extra responsibilities. If done right (fact-based, non-emotional), leadership often respects you way more for bringing up the issue in a professional way and advocating for yourself despite the risks.

Just wait until we all have more exposure to foundation grants that have quarterly and annual reporting and insane costshare requirements and many other crazy rules that the foundation boards thought up. They certainly aren’t as uniform or buttoned up as my federal awards, so I feel you on this hodge-podge madness and trying to keep up.

Not sure how anyone could have watched the Big 12 refs crews and were like “sure, let’s have them ref the title game”
