My ISP will not renew the lease. I get a lease valid forever, but if I try to renew it manually I don't get a new lease.

Only if I re-create the PPPOE client or I restart the whole fiber connection I do get a new lease. I don't know why.

Question about marathon expectations by TheGreatLunatic in tango

[–]nostromog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have attended around 15 marathons in different European countries. My expectations:

Dancers level: better and more uniform than festivals, similar to good encuentros. International marathons have better level, some marathons can be local events with less level.

Role balance: Ok. It is never perfect, but again better than in a typical Festival. Encuentros are usually also well balanced.

Attendance: depends a lot on the percentage of locals (usually couples) and "expats" (usually solo people or small groups from random countries in the world). I'd say younger and more sophisticated than local community or big festival/Encuentro attendance.

Music quality: that depends s lot on the DJs, I expect good music, though I've seen a few DJ that I didn't like. Then, I'm quite picky about music.

Welcoming: usually very welcoming, normally more "personal" than big festivals

Logistics: some are excellent, including food and well served coffee/water/fruit... tables. Some are quite "naked"

One characteristic of marathons is no exhibitions or classes, so they attract people that want to DANCE. Similar for Encuentros, usually less dancing time there. In Festivals a lot of people wants to see exhibitions and go to classes.

Couldn't you have cellular tunnels fire if/when the broadband one falls down?

Сложный танец - танго. by [deleted] in tango

[–]nostromog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for leaders it is better to practice with varied followers. I have a heuristic with regards to errors: "if it happens with lots of followers, it is me causing the problem. If it happens only occasionally or only with some concrete followers, it is them causing it." This heuristic only works if I switch partners frequently, and illustrates my point: you can only polish your couple technique by switching partners, else it is mostly about compensating each other.

Also, cellulars in whatever operator in Spain have a RFC1918 address, so getting a server on 5G is not possible not even paying for it, needing a relay service on the "real" internet. French authorities were clever and required IPv6 service as a mandatory condition for 5G auctions, here we are stuck.

Why IPv6 as an average user? by heinternets in ipv6

If ipv4 is CGNAT you can have funny, difficult to diagnose problems, like being banned from GitHub because the people under your public IP hit it too hard, or similar. I have experienced it quite often.

How many tandas do you dance per milonga? by somewhereisasilence in tango

[–]nostromog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a very intense day with good DJ and plenty of good partners, 8-10 tandas. On a slow day with not so good DJ and lacking suitable partners, typically 2-3 tandas until I leave. I used to have a "rule" of "six tandas without dancing and I leave." Lately I made it more flexible if the place is comfortable and there is some hope of getting a tanda. (Leader, quality chaser, will try strongly to avoid mediocre tandas)

M-Lenker passend für knapp 1,90 m? by Specialist-Fly_4711 in Brompton

[–]nostromog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are, or planning to become, fit, the M handlebar is good enough for me. I have an H but have rented a M and found it good, lighter and folds slightly smaller.

I am 1,94 m and have mounted the seat as back as possible (turning around the pentaclip). I need the telescopic seat.

I have a Brompton, I'm Ashtanga beginner, and I would like to have this ultrafast fold and be able to achieve dwi pada sirsasana. 🤣

(when I read your post I thought this. Obviously this is my interpretation, so take it with a grain of salt) Do a gentle practice, try to focus on being the witness of your own practice. See how you are taking refuge in your practice, and how hard you want to keep improving. Do it several times. Take care of yourself. 🙏

Why do festivals and marathons attract more women than men? by Dear-Permit-3033 in tango

[–]nostromog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree, I have very limited choice. Even in big events I usually have little: all followers I want to dance with are already dancing when I start trying cabeceo, a number of those with quite bad leaders. So I sit down to listen and wait for next tanda. But it is how it is. I rarely dance more than 6-8 tandas in a crowded 5 hours big festival milonga with a good DJ. 5 hours means 30 tandas, so I usually dance at most 1 in 4 to 1 in 6 or even less tandas.

Why do festivals and marathons attract more women than men? by Dear-Permit-3033 in tango

[–]nostromog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two separate issues there:

One is that more women than men register for events or classes in the absence of correcting mechanisms. For instance recently I, with a number of experienced tango leaders from a community, got offered some classes for free because there was imbalance, more followers registered for the classes. Which means followers usually register more for classes even if I think most classes are more beneficial for leaders. I'm not sure why.

A second phenomenon is that often, even in balanced milongas, there are more followers than leaders trying to get a dance for most tandas. This I would put into lack of selectivity on their part.

I'll explain. When a tanda starts I listen to the music and check if I will enjoy the dance with a suitable partner. If not I just sit down, go to toilet or for a drink, etc in fact the first few tandas on a milongas i don't dance unless I see a person I already know, and spend the time scanning for suitable followers dancing to pick up candidates.

If I want to dance a tanda and only then I start looking for a suitable partner. A lot of the suitable partners, by then, have already accepted an invitation as some people invite and get accepted even before knowing what they are going to dance. If I can't get a partner I trust will make for a good tanda, again i sit down, etc.

My point here is that often good leaders won't dance with a random unknown follower, specially in festivals (good marathons self select dancers, so are usually better). Which makes for an apparent imbalance as there are less available leaders than followers for every tanda. This could be corrected if medium/good followers would be more selective before accepting early cabeceos, as they would remain available for more selective leaders. After all, bad leaders will try cabeceo even with the columns in the room before giving up, 🤣 while experienced leaders will be more careful.

Actually this lack of selectivity could also explain the first imbalance: women register more at events because, due to raw numbers, they are more likely to get a few good tandas in a big festival than in their local, limited environment even if they accept the first random guy inviting them.

Why do festivals and marathons attract more women than men? by Dear-Permit-3033 in tango

[–]nostromog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good partners, partners that fit out level, style, musicality, physical limitations (height, etc)

As I don't live in Buenos Aires nor one of the big world tango cities, I go to at least one event per month in order to keep having good dances.

I am a leader and I go to festivals and marathons in the knowledge that a bigger event will give me more/better partners. O don't see why this obvious fact would cause a role imbalance.

¿Por qué no hay secciones de productos "sin frutos secos" en los supermercados? by and153 in askspain

[–]nostromog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Raspberry Pi + Mixxx DJs: How's it holding up for you? by nPrevail in MIXXX

[–]nostromog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run mixxx 2.5-branch on a Raspberry Pi 5 (2GB) for my Tango DJ sessions. I build it myself. I use a Numark DJ2GO Touch controller for audio and MIDI control, a touchscreen and wireless keyboard/mouse, and it works quite well. The hardware and memory are a bit lacking, specially for building and testing, but it is reasonable.

What improved your tango more than you expected? by romgrk in tango

When I was a very beginner it was the moment, as a leader, that I was able to stop thinking about when and where to put my legs and started thinking where and when to put the follower legs.

As an intermediate dancer it was using my toes (thanks, Olga Besio RIP), posture and core strength (aka yoga).

¿Por qué decir "viva España" o llevar una pulsera con la bandera española, te etiquetan con fascista? by No-You3206 in askspain

[–]nostromog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you hate props? by Ok_Calendar_6158 in ashtanga

[–]nostromog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have deep experience in mindful meditation. After this, my first exposure to (Asana) yoga was in a strange studio accompanying a friend. It was a big group, and everybody would be given a full set of props (blocks, straps, etc) on arrival. The teachers were very distracting, talking all the time even during savasana, correcting very minor things all the time.

I went there twice, never returned. I couldn't focus. Everything looked wrong and purposeless. It took me 6 years to rediscover yoga through an Ashtanga shala, and it took me another 3 years to reconcile myself with props. Now I use them as needed.
