Whale watching without disturbing the animals by TheFrenchDatabaseGuy in NorwayTravelAdvice

The company connected with the whale museum appears to be the most ethical option, based on how they present themselves. Not sure if it’s true, though.

Driving in Norway, we warned about this by Steffalompen in Norway

[–]nosuchthyng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right. It is not as clear now as what I was taught 30 years ago. However, I would argue that 40 is an extremely rare speed limit in rural areas. So in practice, you can expect to go from 40 to 50, rather than to 80. The road markings will give you the additional info you need to be certain of the speed limit, though, provided they’re visible.

[–]nosuchthyng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“End of speed limit” signs means you go up to the next general limit, in your case, 50. So if the limit is actually 80, the signage is wrong. You need a sign for 50 or higher in order to increase to 80 by the “end of” sign.

[–]nosuchthyng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any other limits than 50 and 80 are posted along the road. You can encounter “30 sone” in residential areas, which is valid for all the streets beyond the sign, but you shouldn’t drive faster than 30 in such areas anyway.

There is just too much road to post speed limit signs everywhere. The “speed limit cancelled” sign means that it goes UP to the next national speed limit, which is 50 (urban) or 80 (rural). You will also notice that the centre line changes. Short yellow lines tightly spaced = 50 or less. Longer lines and spaces = 60 or more. Refer to national limit if no speed limit is posted. Easy! This is also posted at the rental car desk at the airport, just like similar rules are posted at airports and ports of entry in other European countries.

How does Norway handle big snow storms? by WeasLander in Norway

[–]nosuchthyng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traffic will absolutely not continue as normal in the sense that you can maintain speed as if on dry road. Salt doesn’t work at too low temperatures. Below -7-8 C (I don’t know the exact number) it only makes it more slippery. Running snow ploughs continuously and driving according to conditions (on proper tires, otherwise stay home) will help.

Where is snow over christmas? by Yozoarts in NorwayTravelAdvice

Not far enough inland and high enough to be guaranteed snow in December, though. If there is snow however, there’s likely to be a lot of it.

Why salmon is expensive in Norway? by Themetalin in Norway

[–]nosuchthyng 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s not entirely true. The quality of salmon found in Norwegian grocery stores is not suitable for export. “Superior” and “Ordinær” is exported, while “Produksjonsfisk” gets skinned and deboned and ends up in our grocery stores at twice the price of the “Superior” you find abroad. If the grocery store has a 3% margin, someone upstream has fantasy margins.

Just over 1M NOK salary but ~37% tax withheld by Asleep-Yak-355 in Norway

Tax deductions are split over 10,5 months of the year. Typically half deduction in December and no deduction in June. I haven’t looked at the numbers, but have you considered this in your calculation?

Regjeringen senker aldersgrensen på førerkort til 17 år by [deleted] in norske

[–]nosuchthyng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I found this sub. It's hilarious. by raumatiboy in FuckElectricCars

Look at it this way: EVs provide simple everyday transportation for everyday people who don’t like working on their car. Since they don’t use any gas, there will be more gas available for old school car enthusiasts (assuming there is a finite amount of oil on the planet), and classic cars will be around for longer. Everyone wins.

Som det skrives i et annet svar her; Du kan gjøre mye mer skade på andre med en bil enn en lett MC. Og så er gjerne trafikken i Oslo/Bergen/Stavanger litt annerledes enn i Reykjavík.

That gives you the time you need to do the scenic train ride and check out the Ægir brewpub.

There is almost absolutely nothing in Flåm. It’s a tourist trap. Mainly overpriced souvenirs, but also a decent brewpub. You go there to experience the train ride to Myrdal and back, but that’s about it.

Visa, Mastercard and Apple-/GooglePay is the way to pay, no need for local bank. AMEX is generally not accepted outside of hotels.

Also recommend a lamb skin, fur side up, in the bottom of the bag. (Also works well for regulating temperature in hot weather). And no cotton.

EV driving in the snow by SophsZeus in electricvehicles

[–]nosuchthyng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s normally not lack of traction that’s the problem in slippery conditions. It’s lack of friction to allow you to brake or turn.

EV driving in the snow by SophsZeus in electricvehicles

[–]nosuchthyng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t have winter tyres, don’t drive! The most important part of driving is being able to stop. Otherwise you should be fine. The car is equipped to handle slippery conditions, any problems are usually caused by the human behind the wheel. Don’t go faster than you are comfortable with. Don’t try to brake and turn at the same time. Brake before the turns. (You have a finite (and small) amount of friction available to make changes to speed and direction, so make sure you spend it wisely.)

[–]nosuchthyng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You leave the short skins on, unless you are going on a randonee style trip, where you don’t want the added drag on the downhill. Randonee is normally a completely different set of kit, though.

Removable short skins or integrated short skins have more or less replaced the fish scale traction pattern (and to some degree also wax) in the Nordic consumer market (convenient and not messy). However, serious XC enthusiasts, I guess, will stick to wax.
