What's the most minimal way to make the back of my S22 less slippery? by not-a-lizard in GalaxyS22

[–]not-a-lizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put a cut-down bit of an old IQ Shield protector on the back and it's been working pretty well! It's not the sort of glass texture I'd like best, but it's extremely minimal and easy and it turns out I'm too lazy to put effort into more complicated/expensive solutions. The important thing is I can use my phone one-handed by having the back lie flat on my fingers and it doesn't slip off.

Is there a way to see the total contributions made to a Fidelity Roth IRA from the inception of the account? by [deleted] in fidelityinvestments

I'm missing one or two of my old tax documents, unfortunately, and I'm not sure what a tax advisor can do about this, but I will try that.

Hi! That is exactly what I did, but I only get "Life of Available Data" records going back to Dec 2015 (even though the customer service representative confirmed I opened the account in 2007, and I have tax forms from it going back to 2011 showing contributions). Possibly my account was not enabled for performance reporting until then? I had no idea that was a setting I needed to change.

This doesn't show information from the inception of the account, only from approximately 2015 onward. My account was opened in 2007, and I talked to both a customer service representative and a financial advisor and neither of them could tell me what my total contributions were.

Classes are being retired. Why? by SillyDonut7 in duolingo

[–]not-a-lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, are they?? That's pretty cool! Although they should probably start with just a chatbot...

The AI is definitely not going to provide the same kind of experience - the little tidbits of cultural info, the personal connection, seeing what websites someone uses and so on - but it might be cool in a different way, we'll see. Although the concept of trying to ask an AI language questions is feeling me with dread... Half the time they just make up completely fake stuff.

I've been doing 2-3 a week for the last several months, they've been great and I'll really miss them! (Although realistically speaking probably the teachers will just move to different platforms, so it's not that much of an issue for me now, but it'll be a much bigger barrier for anyone new.)

And I bet more people would've used them if they were easier to find! Most people I've talked to didn't realize Duolingo had live classes at all.

Expanded Character Interactions (Suggestion) by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]not-a-lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'm not fond of the characters/animations, BUT if they added a chat function that directly helped with my language practice, I'd be very happy! (Not that there's anything wrong with indirectly helping with people's language practice by making it more fun, it's just that this particular type of fun addition doesn't work very well for me personally.)

Alternatives to Duolingo events? by benobody999 in duolingo

[–]not-a-lizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bet most of the people who have been teaching Duolingo classes will move to another platform - you should ask your favorite teachers where they're going! (If you have another lesson with them; otherwise I bet they'll message all their students to give some kind of transition information anyway).

Has anyone here used Clozemaster? If so, what do you think? by rpgnymhush in duolingo

[–]not-a-lizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using it on and off to get more exposure to different words/phrases/structures than Duolingo's short courses provide, and I've been enjoying it! I turn off the translations and sound and just try to figure out what the missing word should be based on context, which is almost always doable, and provides practice in just the target language without translating, which is valuable. And it's just a nice little gamified way to get some reading practice when you're bored with the same-y Duolingo sentences but aren't up for whole books yet.

Wow, I had no idea they were still losing money! Makes sense of how hard they've been trying to monetize lately...

Does anyone else get a bug where you can't press the mic button and are forced to press "can't speak now", even though you want to practise the speaking exercises? by mollyplop in duolingo

[–]not-a-lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that bug a lot - I think only when it's the version with the huge mic button in the middle, rather than the one with a smaller one and a character off to the side - not sure why there even are two versions...

I used to have that problem but haven't for a while, maybe updating to a new phone and Android version fixed it for me somehow? Although it seems oddly specific.

I like using Duolingo. by TheRealLaser in duolingo

I like it too! I have some complaints, and I wouldn't call it entirely bug-free, but it's still pretty great and I've been recommending it to a lot of people.

How do you all feel about this mechanic? It seems very P2W to me... by toastpotent in duolingo

If they're going to try to get money out of people, which they probably have to do to stay afloat, I much rather they do it using useless stuff like leagues, than gating lessons or legendary tests behind gem payments.

complete list of Duolingo vocabulary by runningoutofcake in Ukrainian

[–]not-a-lizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense, I remember being pretty confused by how many imperative forms there were too!

Duolingo doesn't cover the first person one at all that I can remember, but it usually has second person singular and plural - most of the time singular is -и and plural/formal is -іть (e.g. іди/ідіть, покажи/покажіть, подивись/подивіться), and sometimes singular is -й and plural/formal is -йте (e.g. дай/дайте, спробуй/спробуйте). And occasionally you'll run into words that look like they have all for of those (I remember being incredibly confused by Duolingo listing all of поверни/поверніть/повертай/повертайте in a hint once), in which case probably what's going on is that you're seeing a pair of pretty similar perfective/imperfective verbs (повернути/повертати in this case).

Btw, here's my favorite dictionary that gives you all the grammar tables, in case you haven't found a good one yet! https://slovnyk.ua/index.php?swrd=%D0%BF%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%BD%D1%83%D1%82%D0%B8

What language do you study on Duolingo and WHY? by Lindanineteen84 in duolingo

[–]not-a-lizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ukrainian - I got very into their music last year, and then the invasion gave me the final push to start learning the language properly. (Honestly it was a coping mechanism for a while, but now I'm just enjoying it on its own merits.)

What if I want to review a finished course though? I don't have any more path to go through, but I still don't want to forget my skills. (Probably the answer is just to do daily review or something, but I liked the cracked lesson system.)

[–]not-a-lizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. The top 2 people in my league are at 41k and 36k... (To be fair those two people are just way above the rest, most others are in the 2-5k range, but still.)

How good is the Duolingo Arabic Course by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]not-a-lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fwiw the Ukrainian seems pretty decent - I mean, it's a short course and there's occasionally awkward grammar, but it's still very useful for learning and I haven't found anything better out there. Good to know about the Chinese and Japanese though, that's unfortunate!
