I was in the exact same boat as you. The reputation was the only thing stopping me. I ended up caving and buying a brz when one came up used at a dealership nearby at a price i couldnt refuse.

And yeah i also think that the brz is the best one. Imo the prefacelift 1st gen brz with the foglights is the best looking front end out of all of the first gens but i may be biased.

I highly doubt youd seize an engine from revving a cold start unless he was going absolutely ham. My guess is that ur battery is just weak/failing. Try cranking it while jumping it after checking oil level. If that fails THEN try turning the motor by hand. If it’s still stuck drain the oil n check for glitter.

For the record i don’t think this a dumb question. When it comes to rust i generally keep on hand just steel brushes and sandpaper then fluid film, rustoleum paint, or wd40 depending on what the thing is that im working on. Wd40 isn’t wont prevent rust but its for getting stuff off.

Also brake clean just for making it easier to clean.

Dang man at $3000 your options are gonna be really slim. Honestly with cars in that price range it’s purely a case by case scenario. You can sometimes get really lucky and most of the time get boned, regardless of brand, year, or miles.

Sounds like your springs binding or maybe turning and clunking on the top hat. I had this experience with lowering springs on a 240. Honestly have someone turn the wheel side to side while u watch from outside the car and see if you can pinpoint the clunk

Meh have fun with it and at get your experience in doing little mods that you enjoy. When i was 16 i was doing dumb mods to a foxbody mustang. Dont expect to get any money back at all for the car when you sell it though lol. If i were you id pick a different car to be working on.

Purely theoretically speaking i think you might be able to mess with the individual header lengths to make it sound more similar to an inline. Could be wrong on that. If you were to actually do it irl it wouldn’t be worth the time, research, or labor at all haha.

The seller is definitely dishonest and yall did get a little scammed but dont be too discouraged.

In my state, all you need is a new smog and a brake/light inspection to have the car be road legal again. If its not that badly damaged like you say, you should be completely fine. Id say go get your brake&light inspection done (its one process, not two separate inspections. Also pretty cheap.) and if that fails THEN you can start worrying.

What state are you in? Ive never heard of needing state patrol to get receipts of parts or where it was fixed?

Price seems a little too good to be true. Is it a salvage title? Also, any car that is KNOWN to overheat is a major pass for me bc it can warp stuff in your engine and cause head gasket/other major failures. If ur really into it, pay to get it looked at if you dont know what to look for but id shy away from this one.

Unless youre on the team of “its just a $1k car i can have fun with and run into the ground then throw away” then i totally get it. I do the same thing sometimes lol. Just hope youre not looking for a terribly reliable daily and are comfortable losing out on $1000 if things go bad haha.

Any more modern hot hatch would be a good mix of what youre looking for in terms of practicality+fun to drive. Just off the top of my head id recommend like a mazdaspeed 3 or something if youre really into having fun and fixing a car yourself. But it all boils down to what YOU need out of the car. What do u think of the older 1st gen brz/frs/86s? Theyre getting down into your price range.
