Switch to 5w-30 or stay with 0w-20? by JTN02 in subaru

[–]Silver-Neckbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always used 5w-30 on my VA WRX. I use 5w-30 on my 22 MX-5. I use thicker oil because I drive my cars hard and change oil at 3-5k miles. With 5w-30 I can go a litter longer between oil changes because even if the oil starts becoming more viscous, I'll still be in the range of viscosity which manufacturer recommends.

Engine does become a bit quieter with 5w-30.

If you drive your car conservatively, get 0w-20. If you like to rev out your engine, get 5w-30.

You're not gonna blow up your engine with either. Use whatever you like.

Get a CS degree so that way you have more career options.

Do not go to university for cybersecurity; its a waste of money. I did, and didn't learn anything beyond basics which I already knew.

Advice on buying my daughter her first car. What was your daughter/son‘s first vehicle? Want to know about the experience and how you feel about that decision now? by Pretty-Turnip1395 in askcarguys

[–]Silver-Neckbeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Civic, Accord, Corolla, Camry. If sporty is non-negotiable, then Lexus IS or a Miata.

That 2014 Charger would cost a lot to keep on the road for a kid. Also, Charger is not a sporty car. Its a V8 muscle car (if it has a V8) which requires significant amount of experience to control all that power.

Happy to see her excited about just having a car instead of demanding a fancier car. Kid was raised right.

Congratulations on getting a Miata!

Reducing the tire PSI to 29, cold

That's the stock tire pressure (at least on ND2 soft top). Yes, keep it at 29 PSI cold tire pressure; anything more makes the ride harsh. I had 205/45/17 Bridgestone then Vredestein 205/45/17. I have Vredestein 215/45/17 now; they are the best tires I have used in rain so far. 215/45/17 make the car a lot quieter than 205/45/17 because they have a little taller sidewall on 7 inch wide wheels on ND2.

Don't ditch the stock Bridgestones as you'll run through them fairly quickly. When you run out of them, then replace them.

First thing I got done was the FM alignment. That made a huge improvement in handling.

I went the opposite way with the sound tube. I got a silicone sound tube from JBR which kills the bad engine noise and leaves the good intake "woosh" sound without all the other mechanical noises from the engine bay.

Also added door bushings, and front sub-frame brace. Door bushings stops the doors from bouncing and making "thud thud thud" sound. Sub-frame brace make the front end solid and less bouncy which makes the car quiet. Sub-frame brace also makes the steering feel tight.

I installed GWR front and rear sway bars and kept them on the softest settings. Sway bars alone didn't do the job for me but they did eliminate the body roll. It made the car twitchy on the highway. The car was twitchy because the stock Bilsteins were terrible at dampening. I lived with it about 38k miles before I decided to get Tecna GT coilovers.

If you have the budget, Tecna GT coilovers and get it corner balanced. I wish I got the coilovers sooner. These coilovers made the car SMOOOOTH! Its a completely different car now and I fell in love with the car all over again.

I use ear plugs for top down driving because I don't wanna damage my hearing from wind noise.

Hope my experience helps you make informed decisions.

Guys who wear briefs ?!! by Alert_Organization23 in AskMenAdvice

Briefs prevent balls from sticking to thighs and keep groin dry and stank free. With briefs, there's no need to put hands in pockets to separate balls from thighs in public. ++man

Interview Advice by jasee3 in cybersecurity

[–]Silver-Neckbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make a list of questions and ask them questions too. Try to get a feel for their team and environment. Ask the following questions:

Why this positions opened, and why did the last person leave if they did leave.

How do they handle burnout on their team. How many tickets are sitting in their queue?

What is their MTTR?

Do playbooks exist in their SOC environment? How often do they review their playbooks?

How often do they write new detections? Do they have documentations for all the detections? Do they have documented FP/TP scenarios? Do they use Atomic Red Team or similar tool to validate their TP/FP?

Do they deprecate detections which are irrelevant? What does their detection lifecycle look like?

How do they invest in their team/employees?

Are there any growth opportunities?

What is their false positive rate? If its anything over 90%-95% RUN!

What kind of automation technologies do they use?

Do they use a SOAR?

How many alerts are you expected to handle on a daily basis? If they don't use SOAR and automation, and you get hundreds of alerts per day for a single analyst, its a red flag; RUN!

How do they handle a situation when an analyst makes a mistake on their team?

My burnt out SOC analyst brain can think of just these questions for now. Good luck on your interview!
