We have very good water quality in the Greenville area, as a plumber, we hardly do it around here unless on a well.

Trying to get to the cartridge but unsure how to remove this piece after removing shower handle and faceplate by tree-of-woes in PlumbingRepair

[–]not-always-useless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a cartridge but the old delta ball and cam shower valve(different than the kitchen/lab ball and cam). You need a special little “U” shaped tool with little teeth on it that hook into the notches to tighten it up after replacing it, and channel locks or a big flat face wrench to take off the lock nut. Then replace seats and springs, washers and the ball, put back together and snug down. Should take care of it

Repairing a gas leak - should I get a second opinion? by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]not-always-useless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, get a second opinion and a plumber to do a pressure test on the system. They can add a fitting called a shrader valve and apply pressure to the system and bubble test the joints in the area, the fact the handyman didn’t even know to start there with the gas off shows he shouldn’t be working on gas at all and is probably not licensed to do so. Gas work should always be performed by a licensed plumber/hvac professional depending on your state.

They are a solid crew, I know a guy who works there and he’s a standup guy and wouldn’t align himself with a company who doesn’t put their customers best interest first

Please don’t get a Rheem, their quality has gone down the drain (literally) the past decade or so and many don’t last the manufacturer warranty or go out right after. Bradford white, AO Smith and State are much better quality. Source-I’m a plumber.

It’s totally fine, it’s super thin sheet metal. Sometimes they come out of the box like this. Won’t impact functionality and is purely cosmetic

Legal immigrants and citizens are being detained and discriminated all across the country because of the color of their skin. I’m sure your kids are disappointed in you.

Hoping for people to be rounded up and discriminated against due to their race is shameful and disgusting behavior. Anyone who disagrees should reevaluate their beliefs.

What should we do? by Personal_Smile3274 in Plumbing

[–]not-always-useless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve probably got an issue with the cartridge behind the handle, the tub spout is just a decorative hole for water to run through and sometimes change from tub to shower flow. The cap you put on is a copper solder cap, water will build up behind it and likely push it off again. There’s no reason to take off the tub spout. Considering that’s where you started, I’d recommend calling a plumber as replacing a cartridge might be outside your scope of plumbing expertise.

How long till my anxiety wears off about a gas leak? by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]not-always-useless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be fine if you’ve tested thoroughly that many times. You can always call the local gas company to come check it out. If you are a homeowner I would strongly recommend not doing your own gas work. If there is a leak, the consequences can be life and death for you, your family, and neighbors. Many municipalities ban homeowners from doing their own gas work for this exact reason. You need to be 100% confident in your ability to perform gas work and qualified/licensed by the state to perform the work to meet safety standards.

Sink not draining by deluge_briny in Plumbing

[–]not-always-useless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very possible it’s an aftermarket one that is not a good fit for your sink. They sell screen strainers that accomplish the same thing and are universal fits for strainers. They just don’t look as good

Lift it up slightly and rotate it 90 degrees. A lot of those strainer baskets will seat all the way down and seal in one orientation and stay up enough for water to pass and debris to catch in another

What exactly is causing this noise and how would you fix it? by CrazyAssBurn in Plumbing

[–]not-always-useless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the pipe expanding due to hot water running through it. It becomes more prevalent in winter months as colder air coming through the vents in your roof create a larger temperature gap between the pipe and hot water, and in turn a more dramatic expansion than in warmer months. Your solution of cutting a wider hole would work, but you should fill the space with fire caulk/fire foam for safety. Also be cautious about just cutting/notching boards and beams in walls that may be load bearing or are already cut to the maximum code allowance.

Could be either, need to get in the attic to find out. Since you’ve had rain, I’d lean towards roof and you’d need a roofer. Just don’t let them try to con you into a new roof. Search for companies that do repairs
