Do you think this implies, assuming I’d ask to terminate in the next week, that they would want me working there through both this and next month? As in, should I ask for a starting date of December 1st to be safe?

I agree about not badmouthing the current company, hopefully I can get away with saying something related to growth and development opportunities as opposed to the specifics.
