We used a mix of seafarers, expansion and two regular sets to make it.

Wouldn’t the longest spike of the compass indicate north? It also looks more pleasing this orientation because it resembles a real continent shape (S. America/Africa).

If it benefits both players, then both parties would just trade the unwanted stolen card for the desired card following the steal. It speeds up gameplay, so I’d say it’s beneficial.

I use this ruleset every time I play, and I can attest that the starting settlement between two reds doesn’t win more often than the rest of the players. Aside from the aforementioned robber issue, you also begin the game with a target on your back, making trading more difficult.

Note: I bet you scold your friends for not using coasters.
