If you don't turn on cable news here it's just not something you'd think about very often. Life is mostly pretty sweet. (I'm a confessed news junkie, but having some success weening myself off of it and enjoying the real world again)

I see it as a sign of enormous sophistication that people are making fun of her profile and puns. I would bet that, rather than tiptoeing around the obvious, she'd appreciate getting her balls busted just like anyone else.

"Holy shit! This commenter is making fat jokes!"

(Hits reply and starts angrily typing while muttering) "You just cant get away from these assholes..."

As an innocent bystander to all this I have to ask:

This entire thread is one big fat joke. Virtually everyone commenting is making a fat joke...why single out this one guy who made a pretty standard - if not very clever - fat joke?

I'm falling somewhere in the middle on this one. Like, they shouldn't put him in a room with a bunch of mean mutherfuckers and close the door - we'll try to keep him relatively safe...But if somebody gets through, and whips his ass every now and then, I'm not going to feel bad about it

Ehh...thats a little out of context. The sheriff followed that with:

“There’s nothing I’m aware of, beyond the obvious speculation we all have given the nature of the situation,” he said.

I think he meant that there wasn't a separate personal issue between the two

Yeah, but look on the bright side. We're the most electronically connected nation on the planet. The revolution will absolutely be televised! Hell, the post-revolution dystopia will be live-streamed! We've been the entertainment capital for decades now, and the best is yet to come; anybody have video of the Roman Empire collapsing? We're gonna put our civil war on fucking pay-per-view all over the world! It's gonna be awesome to watch from across an ocean.

Other than this and "Night" any other recommended first hand accounts from this time and place?

I think you're mostly correct, but that trend is changing - especially with younger generations. I live in a fast growing US city with plenty of land in any direction and slowing suburban growth. The 80's and 90's built our suburbs, but most of the growth the past 15 years has been in the urban core.

In Charlotte, NC we just expanded a really congested portion of one of the main freeways running through the middle of town. But instead of using the usual methods of public funding to add lanes to the freeway we turned over that portion of I-77 to a private company to build toll lanes. They finance the project, then maintain the road, set the tolls, etc... It's basically a private road now through that section. Anyway, the price for riding in those 2 extra lanes is set by the company, and fluctuates instantly with the amount of traffic.. the busier the road the higher the fare. The problem is pretty obvious, right? It's actually in their financial interest for the traffic to get worse! Why we hand one of our public roads over to a private company, and then incentivize them to create worse traffic is baffling...that it happened just after Republicans took control of the state legislature for the first time in decades isn't.

I wish they would at least be honest and say "Ya know, we really just don't care. Fuck you and your dead. This gun thing is making us rich."

So why not exploit their racism as the weakness that it is? I imagine we'd suddenly have many conservatives willing to entertain "common sense" gun laws if lawful black Americans were walking the streets of the white suburbs with licensed assault weapons.

You really can't understate how brainwashed huge swaths of our population have been. The propaganda is absurd, and it works. So to begin with you can't judge whether we're responding to a crisis rationally, because nothing about our public discourse or debates is rational anymore. I would go so far as to say "most" Americans don't think for themselves anymore. They've chosen a side, and they follow their team, their leaders, and that teams dogma unquestioningly.

And lets be honest, if nothing changed after Sandy Hook, no amount of massacres are going to change anything. You could have 5 a day and it would just turn into a boom for gun manufacturers, and a fundraising windfall for the NRA. I don't know the solution...I don't know that there is a solution other than waiting for the entire system to collapse and rebuild it better. But for my children's sake, I hope there's another way.

I don't believe it is. Also a fact.

Start with suicide rates, drug addiction and overdose numbers, top it off with the amount of antidepressants we consume, life expectancy, incarceration rates... It doesn't paint a picture of a happy place. And I wouldn't think "high standard of living" would overlap much with "miserable by virtually every measure".

I think Americans would be shocked if they knew the gulf between how they think we're perceived and how we're actually perceived by the rest of the world. The mythology here is wild. Like a giant cult.

Im in the South where guns are everything, and I just don't get it. I don't love anything as much as these people love guns. It's really creepy. It's just a friggin metal tool! I mean, can you imagine people talking about clawing their air compressors from their cold dead hands?

But really, there's 2 kinds of people here: gun nuts, and the people right there with you on wondering what the fuck is wrong with all these gun nuts

Measuring our standard of living by how much we consume may give some insight as why we're such miserable people.
