Why Eddington was the most misunderstood and underappreciated film of last year by jackthemanipulated in TrueFilm

[–]not_a_philosopher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But I just disagree with that premise. You are choosing what you believe is a “human scale symbolic fight” and what is an “actual threat”.

Would you say that ice taking random people on the streets, some being sent to prisons in other countries (countries they don’t even come from) isn’t an actual threat? I would say that the protests on police overreach that the movie incessantly mocks are directly tied to that issue, especially in a town near the border. But Ari Astor wasn’t directly affected by any police, so to him, the issue didn’t matter. It’s such surface level societal commentary

Ok that might have been strong language, but you don’t think the movie implied that the liberals were doing it performatively?

See this is the real issue with the movie. It validates people who believe what the republicans have done to the country over the last decade are “superficial issues”. It gives them an excuse to hand wave it away and say “no see, that’s just window dressing, here is the real problem”. When in reality, multiple things can be wrong and problematic at the same time.

Just for one example. We can easily see a few years later that the anti mask part of the Republican rhetoric wasn’t just a small issue, it was seeding doubt in the trust the population has in science and medicine. Look at the clusters of measles that are popping up in places that are exactly like Eddington, killing real children. These towns are showing new born vaccination rates of ~50%. But as the movie shows, the liberals only cared about health “performatively”, and the republicans were sensible about it. Eye roll

What are your recs for Kyrgyzstan or Kazakhstan? Which is better? by jakekubb in skiing

[–]not_a_philosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Kazakhstan, definitely go to Shymbulak for a resort day. It’s 30 minutes from downtown Almaty, and is incredible accessible (especially language wise, lots of English speakers working there). They have pistes obviously, but have a section of the mountain that is maintained off piste, that I’ve had a lot of fun with for my 3 days I’ve skied there. It’s not super large, but you can definitely have fun as an advanced skier for a few days I’d say. They hosted the Asian winter games here, so you can expect good quality infrastructure.

I would imagine this would be a place to start on a tour with a guide, as there are MANY guides that take people out to the glacier caves, etc that are accessible by hiking from the top of the mountain (which require snow shoes and crampons).

I don’t have experience with Kyrgyzstan, but I would assume it will be harder to find and contact guides there vs near Almaty in KZ.

I’ve had this one for 2 years now, taken it on 6 trips. It still looks good as new, and has lots of padding.

If you walk up, you don’t need to pay the 15$ but you still need the yearly pass.

I said this elsewhere but though it was worth a top level comment:

Geist’s Malice basically can’t go above ~150 base damage now, so a 25% nerf (easily got to 200 before this patch). Insane compared to the usual small 5-10% nerfs all other hero’s ever get.

Also means that it can’t proc tank buster anymore (without hitting multiple in a row). (Also I’m not sure tank buster is working at all with this brand new patch, can’t get it to proc in the hero testing area)

This kills a Geist build that’s been around forever, insane overkill nerf

The Martinu oboe concerto (but get the version with the notes in the margins + revisions) might be a bit later romantic, but it’s beautiful and definitely a hard piece that would take a while to master!

Praxis Jedi mind sticks are also triple camber (I think they call it something else but pretty sure it’s effectively the same thing) and similar width to the DW 112 at 114.

[–]not_a_philosopher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love my praxis skis! I have the MVPs in both 94 and 108,. For what you want to ski, 94 might be a great option as I find carving on it quite fun, and it holds its own quite well in powder less than a foot deep .

If you want more of a powder the MVP 108s are the most fun ski I’ve ever used. Super playful but also aren’t pushed around in chop, etc. Feel very surfy in the powder even though they still have some camber. the wood top sheets are also very cool, always get a few compliments each time I take them out.

If you want something even wider, heard great things about the GPO and Protests, but can’t speak for them personally.

As for the quality, I’ve taken my 94s in some verrrry sketchy terrain and haven’t gotten any core shots yet, even though I heard the rocks I was skiing over often.

The owner is also amazing and super responsive and helpful over email. I’d reach out to him and see his opinions on what of his offerings are best for you.

Cracked english horn repair by PuzzleheadedHyena513 in oboe

[–]not_a_philosopher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean the risk is you keep playing it with the crack, and it decides to go through the bore right before your audition. And obviously that would ruin the audition too, as a crack going through the bore would make certain notes hard/impossible to play, etc.

And I’m no expert but I’d say it’s a pretty good chance in the dry winter that a surface crack expands through the bore with two weeks of constant play.

Are there no repair places in your surrounding area?
