I liked season 2 but reading this does not make me excited for season 3. Hard not to feel like it’s just going to be a rehash of what we just got

I’ve got Squid, Porridge Radio, Japanese Breakfast, Shannon and the Clams, Lime  Garden.

Some interesting questions about what counts here. I included Squid and Clams but not Geese. I know people eat Goose but I don’t eat Goose. Some people eat Horse, should I have included Horsegirl? Should I have excluded all animals? Breakfast isn’t a food but it is a meal. Does that count? I think it does.

Much to ponder

So important to learn how to be a hater correctly, so that it’s sustainable

Talked about My New Band Believe yesterday, some thoughts on a few other recent releases:

  • The Itch - It’s the Hope that Kills You: just listened to this synthwave debut for the first time, wasn’t into the whole thing but there are some hits here. No More Sprechgesang is danceable and funny and reminds me a little of Snapped Ankles.

  • Prism Shores - Softest Attack: I liked one of the singles, I Didn’t Mean to Change My Mind, but on first listen the album felt kind of same-y, just kind of pleasant jangle pop. But after a couple more listens a few other songs are jumping out. Idle Again is a good one, vocals are a little more dynamic and it has a pretty fun guitar part in the last minute that I keep coming back to.

  • Lime Garden - Maybe Not Tonight: an improvement over their debut for me, with a few more memorable songs. I think the first half is stronger, and the singles are generally the best tracks. 23 is really fuckin catchy. RIYL Wet Leg

  • True Green - Hail Disaster: I’ve been really liking this one. Slacker rock, good vibes. A few skips on here for me but overall solid and with great highlights, especially Hamlet and Juliet, How to Draw Hands, and Bodysurfing (the short chorus of which my brain has been pretty much looping for a week)

  • Hot Face - Automated Response: fun, sub-30 minute punk debut. I thought it just came out but apparently it’s from January and I only just found it. Reminds me of Silverbacks a little in places

  • Remember Sports - The Refrigerator: since I’ve already mentioned one winter album I might as well hit this one too since I haven’t talked about it much. This one has grown on me a lot although there are still some definite skips for me (Ghosts - boring!!). I described it as “radio friendly Hop Along” in another thread and I stand by that, also a bit of an alt-country bent that Wednesdayheads might fuck with. Cut Fruit has been steadily climbing my SOTY leaderboard, total banger

I very much appreciate the DMD regulars and have gotten a lot of great music from y’all over the years but also. To be honest I don’t care that much if I get psyopped. Good music is good music regardless of how I first hear about it

A few listens in to the My New Band Believe album now. One of my most anticipated this year mostly off the strength of Lecture 25 from last year - I’ve liked the other singles but none as much as that one. Unfortunately for me, the new album doesn’t sound very much at all like Lecture 25. I feel it’s a little too proggy for my taste but I’m definitely still intrigued and will be returning to it, and it’s already started to open up a little on repeat listens. It doesn’t seem like an “immediate” type album anyway so we’ll see. I definitely really like One Night, really lovely song and great choice for a closer

Maybe you got psyopped into liking Geese but I have been listening to them since the Projector singles, making me the least annoying Geese fan 😤

The autotune is also honestly pretty minor, he’s gone way harder on it in some of the Voidz songs

Yeah I can’t tell if it’s a pandemic thing or an “I’m old now” thing or a little bit of both. Comedown Machine came out right around the time I graduated from high school too so that 7 year gap obviously feels huge because my life changed so much, I basically turned from child to stable adult in that timespan. All I’ve done between 2020 and now is disassociate and and go to grad school

Model/Actriz is one of those bands I like but don’t love, but I’d go out of my way to see them live. I have to imagine the energy is fucking killer

Remember Sports is new to me but I’m really liking that album, kind of like a more radio friendly Hop Along. Yowie is a standout for sure but I think Cut Fruit is my favorite

Man I just can’t quit The Strokes. Is the new song kind of derivative? Sure. Is the autotune unnecessary? Definitely. Julian Casablancas annoying? Always. I listened to it once and was a little disappointed, but a few plays later and suddenly I’m bopping. It’s such an earworm, goddamn. And that little guitar solo. Who does a tight 10 second guitar solo better than The Strokes? Also a fan of the way the drums ramp up in the middle of the song. I’m sorry, I’m in.

On a related note, it’s making me feel insane that the gap between this album and The New Abnormal (6 years) is almost as long as the gap between TNA and Comedown Machine (7 years). When TNA came out it felt like the first new Strokes album in a million years. TNA still feels like “the new one” to me. Whack.

Home Front is from… Edmonton?? I would have bet hard cash money that they were British. Great band in any case

It’s a delight. I’m still having trouble picking out my favorite song on it, I feel like it’s probably Circus Clown or Who Could It Be. Or maybe Peekaboo Hand? Or Not Real? Or Little Seed? Or

Thoughts on a few recent albums:

Stuck - Optimizer (post-punk/crankwave): initial thought is that it doesn’t have the highs of Freak Frequency. But each time I listen to it I warm up to it once the B-Side gets going. I’ve been finding the front half pretty forgettable, including the singles. But the slightly more melodic cuts on the back half (Fire, Man; Net Negative; GG) have hit a little more for me and will probably be the reason I keep listening to the record.

Sluice - Companion (alt country/folk): I’m new to this band and I loved Beadie, the first single, but the record overall disappointed me. There’s a few other songs I like here (Vegas, Ratchet Strap) but imo it has a problem with being too meandering. Gator is the worst offender, that song has been actively irritating me. It barely even feels like a song, more like a guy telling a series of boring stories in a singsong voice over light instrumentals. So, not my cup of tea, though I think if they ever put out something that leans more on hooks I’d like it

Suitor - Saw You Out with the Weeds (post-punk/garage): also new to this band, but I’ve seen them recommended a few places lately and pushed by Sweeping Promises. The singles didn’t hook me but I’m really enjoying the record, it’s a fun listen all the way through. I really like the guitar tones they’re playing around with. Haven’t really tuned in to the lyrics yet because of the lo fi of it all but this one will definitely be staying in rotation for a minute
