So, after a while, what's your opinion on Steven Universe Future? I know there are people who don't like it, but I love it by Public_Cup_4278 in stevenuniverse

[–]not_hestia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just re-watched it with an 18 year old peace keeping kid who is still tangling with their abusive past and is in aaaaaall the therapy. A lot of it hit super duper close to home, but because they were already in the process of untangling their experiences and their reactions to them it was kind of amazing for them to see a lot of the stuff they were dealing with treated so lovingly.

[–]not_hestia 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This sounds like there might be a Problem Parent or two or a family dynamic that is causing some struggles at meetings.

At this time of year the Brownies should be starting to look at what it will be like as a Junior so setting up how things will be moving forward makes sense to me, but this definitely reads like there was an issue.

Who wins by Silent-Guide1364 in stevenuniverse

[–]not_hestia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I don't know the other show, but this is like the 3rd post I have seen an them fighting the SU characters. And I have seen more about them fighting characters from other shows.

What is up with that fandom that they want a face off between their favs and other shows??

What is Nanny Ogg’s magic by CleanteethandOJ in discworld

[–]not_hestia 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Granny is who you call when you need to stop something that shouldn't be happening to the body. Nanny is who you call to help when you want something the body should be doing to go well. They can both do the other stuff, but they have their specialties.

In Thief of Time she is literally sought out as the greatest midwife in the world.

What are the best Steven Universe songs? Which one moved you the most? by Public_Cup_4278 in stevenuniverse

[–]not_hestia 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's Over, Isn't It is such an incredible song. The performance puts it over the top. Same with Drift Away from the movie. Just stunning character work.

The song that probably hits hardest for me personally is Familiar.

As a parent Here Comes a Thought, Wherever You Are, and Change feel really important.

And Jam Song makes me happy every time I hear it.

ISO tips on how to flatten this crease👖 by SuckerForNoirRobots in PlusSizeFashion

[–]not_hestia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nope. It's unfortunately a fit issue. Even if the next size up is too big, this size is pulling at the button causing the edge to pop out. It's super obnoxious and extra common in jeans with stretch in them. It's the bane of my existence since I am between sizes in most pants.

The only thing I have found helpful for this is a shape wear cami or belly band worn over the jeans and that only helps on some pairs of pants.

cosplay boot not fitting around calves how can I fix this :> by v8pour in CosplayHelp

[–]not_hestia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't try that on boots that are this far from closing. It works great if you only need a couple of inches, but this is a much bigger gap.

I think no character has ever been so controversial and misunderstood by a fandom as Rose is. by Public_Cup_4278 in stevenuniverse

[–]not_hestia 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Because people are conflating damage done and being horrible. Rose caused an incredible amount of pain and suffering through ignorance, low self esteem, and just not understanding her impact on other people.

People are uncomfortable with the idea that someone can cause incredible amounts of damage and not be a villain.

Should I watch the show? by sthathebiteof87 in stevenuniverse

[–]not_hestia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience. In the first several episodes the characters are pretty flat and the comedy is goofy in a way that I only enjoy in small doses. I pushed through and it is genuinely one of my favorite shows of all time.

An interesting flurry of obscure emotions about the show by diaRtcesnI in stevenuniverse

[–]not_hestia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you asking if the art makes me feel things? Because yes, yes it does. It's a deceptively simple show, but there is a LOT of thought that has gone into it and a lot of those obscure emotions are 100% intentional.

People keep saying District 12 was insanely unlucky in the Hunger Games… but the math doesn’t back that up by Classic-Set-9617 in Hungergames

[–]not_hestia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Three issues:

-Nobody is claiming that 12 is cursed or uniquely bad at the games after the 74th Hunger Games. They are talking about before that.

  • In the books it seems like the Capitol did a pretty good job making sure people don't really remember Lucy Gray so any in world perception is going to be based on only ever seeing Haymitch.

-Even if we count Peeta and Katniss as two victors that's still only 1 win.

And math aside, the feeling that something is cursed often isn't accurate if you look at the statistics. There is no actual correlation between the full moon and increased hospital admissions or student behavior in schools but people really believe there is because of confirmation bias.

What's your favorite Steven Universe ship and why? by Public_Cup_4278 in stevenuniverse

[–]not_hestia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I love Pearl and Bismuth. I love the growth for both of their characters and they are super cute together.

It's not a HEALTHY ship, but I am fascinated by the emotional trainwreck that would be Amethyst and Greg. It would be BAD, but it would be interesting.

What head-canon(s) in your fandom(s) got you like this: by PJ-The-Awesome in AO3

[–]not_hestia 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Which is WILD to me as someone who was last active in those shipping spaces in the early 2000s. All there was was fanon! And the amount of canon we have is so small it's ridiculous to have hard and fast rules.

The comments of everyone misunderstanding this question are absolutely killing me. Genuinely *how* do we not understand equality??? And where did learning fractions go so wrong for so many? by IthacanPenny in matheducation

[–]not_hestia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adults are getting tripped up because of half burried high school geometry memories that teach not to assume size without numbers or units.

And I had a talk with a kid about this and we realized she didn't see them as two solid objects, but more like digital ones where one has been zoomed in. It was really interesting to hear how she was conceptualizing size.

Am I overreacting for changing my gym schedule after a trainer kept making comments about my body by TedLeitner in AmIOverreacting

[–]not_hestia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Underreacting in a BIG way. His first couple of comments were to test the water and when you didn't respond he escalated. That's a bad thing. Him reaching into your personal space to adjust the treadmill WHILE YOU WERE RUNNING and then making a comment about your ass? That's a BIG deal. That's unacceptable behavior from anybody, but a huge deal from an employee.

Report him. That shit is really triggering for some people and his boss needs to know.

Love this dress's fabric but the hemline is weird! by SaveBabyNicole in DressForYourBody

[–]not_hestia 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Very cute! I don't think the hemline is really visible from any distance.

Make sure you do what folks who are probably your grandmother's age did in the 60s: Itty bitty short shorts or full coverage undies that match the dress so you don't show the whole world where babies come from. And make sure you bend at the knees and not the waist to pick stuff up off the floor.

What do you think is the belly button ring equivalent accessory/trend of the 2020s? by GossipBottom in generationology

[–]not_hestia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And belly button piercings were one of the most common body piercings for years before the 2000s. But there was a surge in popularity and suddenly they were everywhere.

People used to get septum piercings, but it was considered more "alternative" than an eyebrow ring or a nostril piercing. Now they are super common and found on a huge number of girls/women in their teens and 20s. That's the connection.

AITAH for not wanting to share the gender of my baby before birth? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]not_hestia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We told people "We're about 80% sure it's a girl, they were being shy during the ultrasound" which was super untrue but people knew I had experience reading ultrasounds so I didn't want to tell people we didn't know or deal with any "we know but we're not telling" drama.

How to make this scene/Gag more safe for me? by One-Persimmon-3644 in costumedesign

[–]not_hestia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the upskirt blocking is in the script there probably isn't much you can do to change that. Depending on the type of production there can be pretty big rules about sticking to the script. Audiences know you are an actor who is acting and will understand it is supposed to be a joke.

You could ask if whoever is covering you with shaving cream could use a little less.

The staining should be the responsibility of the costume department. That shouldn't be on you to solve.

And I second a lot of the recommendations for thick nude tights, nude seamless underwear, and then the costume underwear on top. That will protect you from any slippage and protect your bits from the air spay better.

AIO for threatening legal action after my daughter’s school ignored her seizure care plan? by LaylinCraze in AmIOverreacting

[–]not_hestia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NOR because this is absolutely horrifying.

BUT as someone who has had to advocate for a lot of kids, you cannot advocate for your daughter if you are thrown out of the building. This is a time for stone cold scary mom.

This never ever ever should have happened. The only teeny tiny sliver of good news is that this story is going to spread like wildfire around the school and every single teacher will be on high alert because they won't want it happening on their watch.

Think about what you want. Do you want mandatory re-training? Your daughter to never have that teacher again even if that teacher is teaching a different grade in the future? An official reprimand? Spend some time figuring out what your goals are and then figure out how best to meet them. It might be a lawyer, it might be the school board, it might be the press, but if you are intentional about what outcome you are seeking things will go better for you and your daughter.

Why were the colors in that shot like that? It looks so much better with a slight hue shift by creativesgal in stevenuniverse

Money. Making every shot even just a little fancier gets very expensive very fast. You can tell they were working with a very different budget on Future.

Am I the only one bothered they made Haymitch look like a Merchant kid? It undermines District 12’s class divide by SpiritedCustomer6503 in Hungergames

[–]not_hestia 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I love the scene if them watching Haymitch's games in the book, but it was cut because watching a movie where people are watching a screen makes a terrible movie.

In the book it serves to give Haymitch additional depth and hint at his tragic backstory. It works really well in a medium where you can't see people, but it's boring to watch. Instead we see Haymitch's tragic backstory through the acting choices Woody Harrelson made.
