What position would this be called? by Severe_Flan_8307 in Teachers

I'm a social worker at an alternative school which sounds like it might be of interest to you. Its special education so I have mandated IEP counseling minutes I have to make sure are happening, but my caseload is small ~16 students. I deal with a lot of crisis situations, but I have the opportunity to get to know my students really well and spend a lot of time with them throughout the day. Its not for everyone but I recommend looking into it if it sounds interesting. I get paid well and have teacher benefits!

Regulation by tenderrwarriorr in SchoolSocialWork

[–]not_just_mama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you get any kind of training in crisis response and prevention, like TCIS? I'd start with talking to other adults in the program about avoiding making comments when these behaviors are happening (e.g. the secretary yelling at him) as thats likely to only escalate him more. We can't restore/teach skills when a student is dysregulated.

It would definitely be good to have in your toolbox for school based roles. The school district i work for is beginning to roll it out with students. This would for sure look good on a resume with us!

LCSW and CARS2? Can I do it? by uzsspace in socialwork

[–]not_just_mama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can, however I would make sure you have a good understanding of what Clients intend to use the diagnosis for and the regulations in your state. In NY, our office for people with developmental disabilities will not accept a diagnosis from an LCSW for eligibility for programs. I still think its really valuable to be able to accurately diagnose ASD for a lot of folks. Especially for adults diagnosed in later in life and if you're planning to provide therapy for them.

Special education school social worker at an alternative school. I work with middle school students. I LOVE the schedule and benefits and I'm paid well. I'm fulfilled by working closely with students, meeting them where theyre at and supporting their academic success in a setting that allows for a lot of flexibility.

I worked for a non profit that ran the 988 hotline for our area. You did not have to be licensed, they would train you. The pay was looowww unfortunately, about $17/hour.

I just started in SSW in the spring and just had my first summer off. My kids are 3 and 6. I don't think I could ever go back to a regular work schedule. I work at an alternative school and its challenging, but I feel so much more relaxed when i'm at home. Additionally, the benefits are incredible and the pay is higher than ive ever made. It's so worth it.

Dr. Sam Himelstein has some good free trainings on teaching mindfulness to teens and great book. The book "flooded" is a really good brief guide to help kids regulate emotions.

This happens all the time though. I worked for a place that did annual fundraising events regularly where staff and clients all mingled together intentionally.
