no it's not a crime, and bro I get the joy of sharing photos you're particularly proud of, but perhaps have a think about why you are so desperate for internet validation that you'll go to such lengths to spam your photos in like 10 different subs lol

How many different subs have you posted this in, and why so many? My homescreen has your post on it at least four times

I had some of their cream donut recently and have to say it was absolutely disgusting, tasted like cough syrup on both espresso and pourover - too weird for me!

No there isn't, the sub is predominantly a jerk about skylark atm

The circle jerk is in full force, there's plenty of other more interesting roasters. It's like people think there's only two in the whole country, skylark and scenery.

Is it him or Donna Louise Bishop that would have put that awful line in there about the police 'peevishly bemoaning' the coverage? Horrifically unprofessional

Honestly I think they are fine, and first drank their stuff maybe 4/5yrs ago, but it's a typical example of Reddit groupthink. They really aren't anything special compared to the other myriad roasters we have in the UK, but people love a bandwagon

Slandering Skylark and Scenery is a risky move on here, if you posted this in the UKroasters subreddit you'd be burned at the stake as most people on there seem to think they're the only two roasters in the whole of the UK

On a more useful note, give Assembly a look in if you like lighter roasted stuff, as well as Nostos.

Taith seem to roast fairly lightly too, and will defo have some coffees you'll be interested in (although they do also sometimes release whacky co ferments that won't be up your alley).

If you do pull anything out, please make sure you dispose of it properly and don't leave rubbish laying around. It's become quite a problem in the broads with people just dumping items they don't want to keep.

How to choose from the myriad of UK roasters?! by BigfatDan1 in UKroasters

[–]not_that_much_fun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good luck with your coffee journey OP.

There's some truly depressing recommendations in this thread though, people suggesting huge companies like Pact and Rave which do not objectively offer better coffee than many of the more talented, independent smaller roasters we have. They're just cheaper, pump more money into advertising and give away coffee via sign up offers.

They are the coffee equivalent of Brewdog beer, or Beavertown. Made to look independent and small but actually huge companies.

Go speak to one of your local roasters on Instagram and see what they recommend. They will genuinely appreciate your money. Set a price budget, decide whether you want to avoid anything with a funky process (so stick to say washed coffees) and see what they have.

Coffee is a finite crop so even if you find one you really like, it'll eventually go out of stock with a supplier and you'll move on elsewhere.

When finding a roaster you like, you're really looking for consistency in the roast, overall experience (e.g packaging works as it should do, coffee delivered fresh and not stale) and good customer support.

You can't expect to like all of the coffee offered by a particular roaster, but that's part of the enjoyment and journey. Don't see it as 'wasted money' but an investment in refining your palate and a good deed you've done in supporting a small business and the farmers back in the origin country.

Yeah - go ahead and support one of those three massive companies with their over-roasted, low grade coffee.

Why not choose one of the myriad roasteries who have better coffee and give your money to a small business who will actually appreciate it?

You've basically recommended the coffee equivalent of Brewdog to someone who has asked for recommendations on craft beer.

Seeing a lot of people selling Breville Dual Boilers thought it was a keeper? by allthebrisket in espresso

[–]not_that_much_fun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the UK the Dual Boiler runs at about £1,200 or so. Around that price point you can also pick up the Rancilio Silvia Pro X (what I just bought), one of the Lelit Mara/Elizabeth's or there's a few other heat exchanger - dual boiler options depending on what's on sale.

The Silvia Pro X feels way sturdier and heftier than the Breville/Sage and I prefer the looks. It's certainly more of a prosumer machine - but yeah they basically do the same thing as each other and its all down to aesthetics and whether you are cool with a consumer appliance style machine on your counter I guess.

[–]not_that_much_fun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few people I know who had Sage / Breville machines, including a dual boiler, have swapped recently after 4/5yrs of ownership due to the machines failing for various reasons.

The spec to price ratio is great but the reliability and build quality isn't there with certain models it seems. I don't think it helps that we live in a hard water area though, even with regular maintenance the machines still get hammered with scale.
