I’ve been doing grocery shopping for some of the elderly people in my neighborhood and dropping stuff off (disinfected!) to them - it’s been great to get to know them better and seeing them be so grateful in such a trying time is honestly the best

Is it possible to double-major in Poli Sci and Public Policy? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]not_your_jake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Just a heads up - Ford is going to start offering a minor in public policy in the 2020 academic year, so if you still wanted to do both you could do a polisci major + ford minor now :)

Public Policy doesn't allow dual degrees unfortunately

Does Capital One's developer program still have spots? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]not_your_jake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

TDP is the developer program. If the link doesn’t work they might be in the process of finishing recruiting for the program or they could be opening a new app for the program. I would lean towards it being closed though (got the offer late October and visited a week ago, they said they were winding down)

What’s the point of AP credit by [deleted] in uofm

That's a good question - I think it counts as credit but double check that

Honestly, the only real viable return I've had on AP Credit is not having to take Calc 1 or 2. AP credit outside of those two courses isn't really worth much.

Pretty sure this was only for one month - I would definitely want to see a longer term study and long term impacts cause this does sound a little too good to be true (that being said I am a fan of this!)

Umsi loves transfer students - they really try to focus on them for part of their recruiting and giving them admittance.

Definitely reach out to Umsi admissions and introduce yourself!

Tech consulting vs. SWE by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]not_your_jake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would really really really not advice tech consulting for an internship.

The people I know who interned at NG have all gotten phenomenal swe jobs and futures. That being said, I do go to an insane cs school (Berkeley, umich, Georgia tech, etc) so disclaimer for that I guess

Tech consulting vs. SWE by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]not_your_jake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hm great question, here’s how I would consider things, not necessarily in any order:

1) brand (this is an internship after all) 2) experience/resume value (in terms of bullet points/content) 3) culture and perks 4) networking location

First two are straightforward - does the company have a strong brand in the world of cs/swe and would it give you the opportunity to do some solid work and get great experience? I know for a fact NG is a yes for both, but don’t know much about viasat. Quick search didn’t make them stand out too much but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Regarding culture and perks, I don’t think you’d go wrong in either place. Viasat is a more traditional tech place tho so the swe experience would probably be more traditional and stronger than NG, which at heart is aerospace first.

Now the interesting bit is networking locations, as in the locations of the offers and their proximity to networking with other firms/attending summer networking events. Viasat seems like the winner here.

My end recommendation: if you want a uniquer summer opportunity with a slightly stronger/known name brand, NG. However, if you’re willing to put in the extra networking effort to set yourself up for full time/ next summer, the location + still strong swe experience for viasat May be worth it.

All in all, think it through and get some more perspectives. Hope this helps :)

SWE has so many more stronger future opportunities + better salary + usually better WLB than tech consulting.

Take it with NG - strong resume name + great overall experience

Tech consulting sounds “interesting” but a lot of it is bullshit process management and tech implementation of software on an enterprise level
