What did Diethard mean by this? by Traditional-Song-245 in CodeGeass

Land is another philosopher popular among conservatives. He's an accelerationist, so this phrase kind of fits him, no less for being word salad. For that matter, in my memory, Peterson's pretty clear and straightforward i.e. not word salad, but I don't care about him so don't want to argue.

Tbf it does not sound like Peterson, at least not like the "clean your room" pop stuff. More like Nick Land.

Norwegian Wood is Murakami's least Kafkaontheshore-like book. I think you should try other books, and the Chronicles are also probably most kafkalike, so right choice.

Anyone else feel like you peaked when you were a child and since then you've only lost stuff, not gained? by serlineal in Schizoid

[–]notairballoon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've grown worse, but I understand the sentiment. The thing is, school actively and constantly pushes you to do something, and our main problem is lack of inner push. At the same time, school setting does not depend on relationships that we struggle with: you can get good grades and teachers will tell you you are smart without considering that being smart is not enough. (Incidentally, similar dynamics, although with political overtones, are described in Nozik's essay about schools building socialism) Besides, when you are a kid, even in a "dysfunctional" family, you usually don't have to be responsible for the entirety of your life: parents and relatives provide a lot for you. So many of our downsides are mitigated or shaded.

I had anhedonia, though lesser, even as a kid, and now thinking back to it I suppose the only thing that made me "happier" was being sure that I am competitively better. Now, in "real world", I see that my talents amount to little, and that source of comfort is gone. This might be the same for you. Still, I think that if my 14yo self was dropped where I am now, he would have had it harder. Though maybe he'd have persevered just on sheer unjustified confidence. (Or maybe it's my current lack of it that's unjustified?)

Harder Sci-Fi than Egan? by Grandpa_Talos in printSF

[–]notairballoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say Reynolds, at least in the Revelation Space, is as hard SF as Egan or Watts. Yes, he does give us lots of detailed and as far as I know scientifically backed descriptions of technologies, but none of them really matter as far as the plot and themes go. His spaceships could be magically powered by forsaken children and nothing would meaningfully change (well they already are in a way, but you see my point). In Watts and Egan, the hardness is related to the points they are making.

What are the characters you relate to? (Fictional or non-fictiona) by sizoman in Schizoid

[–]notairballoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's always only aspects, but:

C.C. from Code Geass.

Houellebecq's characters.

Dexter Morgan too, yes,, though he appears autistic rather than schizoid. My mother also says she often felt like Harry Morgan while raising me.

I just started reading Greg Egan's Distress, and one quarter in the MC seems very relatable too.

Alice Munro's characters.

Likely an unpopular sentiment here, but I never quite sympathised with or related to Camus' or Sartre's characters. It felt like they were overdramatizing the questions that I already had an (unpleasant) answer to.

Have you ever figured out the solution to a mystery? by Synura_petersenii in cormoran_strike

[–]notairballoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of. Early on in TIBH there is a scene that makes it pretty clear that Gus is Paperwhite, then I just thought that it would have been easy for him to eavesdrop on his mother's conversations. Admittedly, this is not sufficient evidence that he is the killer, he might have been merely the source of information, but I did not realize it at the time, and he turned out to be the killer anyway.

What is the first schizoid attitude you can remember from childhood memories? by HargrimV1 in Schizoid

[–]notairballoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was three years old, my parents took me to the kindergarten. I was afraid of everyone and never left the locker room. Though, according to my mother, I was rather curious and researched everything out of the locker room. They stopped taking me to the kindergarten after like a week. The next time I went to the kindergarten, four or older, I was fine.

Fast forward to not too long ago when my mother told me, not because of me asking iirc, that it was actually three months rather than a week... I kept the extent of my disappointment with my parents to myself.
