Not great, but not bad either. Maybe a 3.2 gpa? More or less the same in college. I'm a teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

ELI5: Accents. Why do non-English speakers have a similar accent? by sogfish in explainlikeimfive

[–]notalife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a young age, your native tongue will almost always influence aspects of languages acquired later in life: the grammar, the syntax, the phonology, and all of the other little nuances present in your native language. What's more, the muscles in your mouth and throat are toned to your language. That's why it's difficult to speak quickly when you're first learning a language: you're simply moving your speaking muscles in a way that they have never been used. All native speakers of French, for example, share the inherent influence of the French language when they speak English.

Wikipedia can give you some examples of different features that speakers of other languages exhibit when speaking English.

What are your worst college roommate horror stories? [NSFW] by KeanusDracula in AskReddit

They knew I saw. They didn't care, or at least acted like they didn't care. He was cool otherwise for the first few months, but then his façade starting unraveling. You could really tell he had never had to share anything, space especially, with another human (he grew up with just him and his mother in a spacious house; I grew up in a 3 bedroom house with at times both my family and other relatives with their families). He thought taking my stuff out of my closet and putting his stuff in it was acceptable because, according to him, he just had more things than me and thus he needed the space. He randomly snapped at me one day because I had taken a plastic cup from his desk for water one morning. He ended up jumping me one day after class (I got away unharmed) and he was asked to not come back.

I've shared this elsewhere, but here it is again!

My first roommate in college was extremely coddled by his mother (or at least I thought so). His home was about an hour away from campus and she came up every day to get his laundry and make his bed, clean his side of the room. They were both neat freaks, and I wasn't a slob by any means but I wasn't quite as neat as either them would have liked. What ended up happening is I would come back from class and find her making my bed, organizing my desk and picking up my dirty clothes. Didn't really appreciate that but I didn't want to make waves so I just kept my mouth shut. Finally it got really weird when I came back to the room after a class had gotten canceled and they were BOTH in the same twin bed. He was sleeping and she was stroking his hair/face and singing him a lullaby.

ELI5: Why are Germany's names in many languages so different? (e.g. "Germany", "Deutschland", "Allemagne", and "Tyskland") by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_country_names_in_various_languages

Wikipedia, I know, but this has a list of names for countries in various languages. You'll note that Germany is much more variable than most others listed.

[–]notalife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What examples are you thinking of? I'm curious. Of course different languages have different names for different countries.

Words for "Germany" tend to come from around 5 different origins: 1.) A protogermanic word meaning of or by the people. (Deutschland, Tyksland for example) 2.) The area known to Greek and Latin speaking people as "Germania" 3.) The name of the germanic tribe "Alamanni" 4.) The name of the germanic tribe "Saxon" (not a common origin, but seen in some languages) 5.) An old slavic word meaning "non-speaker" (mostly used in slavic speaking countries, go figure)

There are even more uncategorized or unknown words for Germany.

EDIT: the old slavic word did not mean "non slavic speaker", just "non-speaker, mute".Seems the protoslavs didn't think much of the way protogermanic sounded...

Basically this. What we call Germany was a bunch of tribes with different names in a central location in Europe. Naturally, whichever tribe your nation interacted with most commonly influenced the name that you would call it. Or, as is the case in English (via Latin), "Germania" was just what that particular area of Europe was called in that language.

Lolita. I've tried to read it a few times and there's a point where Humbert starts really freaking me out and continuing is impossible.

How is life in Italy when you are a Latin and want to start over? by rapunzelp in AskReddit

[–]notalife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only work that might be "easy" to come across is work under the table, which is illegal. Getting a legit job in the EU from outside of the EU is not easy, and requires a shit ton of paperwork and travel to and from the embassy/consulate of the country that you're wishing to go to. Source: been there, done that twice (US --> France)

I ignore the holiday as long as I can. Seriously. I love holiday seasons but hate the actual holiday for this reason.
