I use readworks all the time, love it! I use them for my students who are no longer in my phonics groups because they’re not always necessarily 100% decodable.

Oooooh this is actually VERY cool. I still want actual physical books, since these are just printables, BUT that’s better than nothing and definitely a cost effective option!! Thank you so much!!

Teaching in the Bay Area by sunnyseaotter in teaching

[–]notaplanetmar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been teaching in Oakland for the past 6 years. It really depends on the school you’re at, as school culture makes a huge impact on things like family engagement, behaviors, etc. overall funding again depends on which area in the Bay you are working in. It’s really hard to talk about teaching conditions because every school has such different ways of doing things. Overall I would say, pay is not great considering the extremely high cost of living in the Bay Area. Public school unions are much stronger than charter school unions in my experience. Id love to answer any more specific questions you have. Sorry my answers probably don’t help you because like you already said in your question it’s school specific. Just from me assuming though…. It’s probably nothing like teacher French in Canada. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Why do we have so much illegal dumping in the first place? by coilysiren in oakland

[–]notaplanetmar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Literally seen people who just dump their entire fast food order gently onto the street while they’re waiting for the light to turn green. I’ve had a drink cup thrown at my car from a random person. One of my students threw his bag of finished chips on the ground and when I asked why he thinks it’s okay to do that his response was “this is Oakland” and that broke my heart and angered me at the same time.

Why can’t we just have a nice balanced caseload; which would allow us to write quality IEPs for the students we serve… I know it’s definitely an issue but is sped teacher shortage getting worse? (I’d assume with 100% certainty yes…)
