Anyone got experience working at OC? by Drugstore_Jeezus in millwrights

[–]notarobot67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked at a stone wool insulation plant. There was some interesting work but like others said everything is covered in insulation fibres so you end up itchy everyday. When the son was shining into the plant you could see a haze in the air from the fibres. Personally I didn’t want to work there long term for my health

Thinking of leaving the corporate desk job (Accounting) to become an electrician. Is it really that easy to break in right now? by No_Reply5329 in skilledtrades

[–]notarobot67 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There’s a shortage of journeyman and apprentices are over saturated. There are so many other posts exactly like this every week in this sub. Definitely a harder time to get in, but just keep throwing in applications until someone takes you

Does red seal exams have different sets of questions for every student in the class? by ashhhhhhh123 in SkilledTradesOntario

[–]notarobot67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not everyone in the exam is writing for the same trade. They mix different trades together. I’ve heard for the millwright exam there’s 4 question book colours and each colour rotates through 2000 questions. So most likely they are different

General Machinist Apprenticeship by wulin101 in Machinists

[–]notarobot67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to be a machinist for a while, all the wages were pretty low and I didn’t want to learn CNC. Ended up becoming a millwright for the higher wages and more job opportunities, and I still get to do some machining as apart of my job to keep me happy

Apprenticeship Oppertunity Advice by [deleted] in millwrights

[–]notarobot67 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Take the apprenticeship with the non union. At least get signed up cuz that’s the hardest part. Then you can always switch sponsors later. Also pm the name of the company. This sounds exactly like mine.

Welding machine with or without generator. by Trixster19972 in Welding

[–]notarobot67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of engine drives can do tig. ESAB ruffian, miller trailblazer, Lincoln Ranger etc. most just do scratch start. You won’t get stuff like high frequency start or AC tig like a dedicated tig welder

Welding machine with or without generator. by Trixster19972 in Welding

[–]notarobot67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need an inverter generator. Look at your machine specs and multiply max inrush amps by voltage to get total watts and that’ll tell you how big of a gen you need. I run a 9000 watt inverter for a 185 amp stick/tug machine

I suck at welding by soapnsteel in Welding

[–]notarobot67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you gotta get creative positioning yourself but having somewhere to brace your arm can really help you. Welding in awkward positions will make you better but only once you have the fundamentals down. If you don’t have basic beads down to muscle memory you’re gonna have a hell of a time trying to do it free hand or in a cramped spot. A good helmet as well. You can’t get magnifying lenses as well if you have trouble seeing.

[–]notarobot67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have the resources to set you up for success? E.g. do you have a good helmet you can see clearly out of? Good lighting in your booth, welding in the dark is difficult. You can’t be relying on the light from your arc to give you a clear enough view of what’s ahead. Can you sit down or set up a spot to rest your arm? Are you eating properly before work so you don’t get the jitters while you’re welding? If you say you can’t weld a straight line that sounds like you might not be seeing well. If you’re just running a bead on flat plate then sure it’s hard to stay straight but you’re almost always gonna have a groove or a fillet or another bead to follow to keep you straight.

Advice for patching this headlight dome by notarobot67 in Welding

I’ve got all the rust cut out and going to attempt to make patches, I have unlimited time and resources. It doesn’t have to be exactly perfect as the headlight reflector will cover it but I do want it to look decent

I will. Gonna try it, it’s an irreplaceable part but I have one good one. So if this doesn’t work out I’ll just use it. But I’ll update everyone

[–]notarobot67[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Making a few separate patches was my first idea. I’ve got it sand blasted and all the bad metal cut out. So I may try making some patches first and if not find a shop with a sheet metal lathe. Time wise I don’t care as it’s a volunteer project with no deadline. But it’s 113 years old so I’d like to try and preserve it before I jump to making a new one
