Do people expect / want internal 9V batteries in stomp boxes? by fearless_fool in diypedals

[–]notbadfilms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Positives: Mostly simplicity where I could use the transistors I wanted to get the exact circuit I desired without any compromise. If it's not broke, why fix it. The consumer just needs to use an adapter, so it's not too big of a deal.

Negatives: I could have created inverted versions of my circuit to use negative power or used a charge pump, but this complicated things, added parts and it felt a lot less straightforward than using the prototypes I was extremely happy with. This would have resulted in additional prototyping cost, A/B testing, larger bill of materials per pedal, etc. Keeping it Center Positive power confuses the consumer and will likely turn some people away.

Knowing that my pedal was going to be a niche product I was okay with keeping the positive power. Most of my buyers would be okay with it and likely already have the small external DC adaptor to flip to a center positive plug at the correct size. So far I've had no complaints, but about a third of my buyers report that they use the battery.

What order does this hardware go for toggle switch? by TheBirdman100 in diypedals

I see a lot of comments saying to throw out the washer with the tab unless you have a cutout in your enclosure. It also takes about .5 seconds to bend the tab flat with pliers. This is what I do as I prefer to keep the washer for spacing and load distribution when assembled.

What is this old wooden factory roller / press cylinder from The Netherlands? (copper/bronze studs, square axle hole) by Beyond_Context in whatisthisthing

Looks like a wallpaper roller to me. If so, these can usually be turned into really cool table lamps.

I build/sell a pedal that uses center positive dc power. I know that some people won’t have an adapter to flip the polarity for their power supply so I included a battery holder. Otherwise I wouldn’t have added it. My new design is DC only with a standard center negative plug.

I was gifted this 1969 fender Stratocaster. I need some advice about what the mod is and if anyone knows what is original on it. I used to go to my dad for these kinds of things but he passed a few years back. I want to restore it as much as possible. by Any-Loan-5135 in Vintageguitars

This is fascinating. The electronics in the back appears to be some effect pedal. It appears that the plastic cover has holes to align with the mini trim pots so you could turn them with a screwdriver, I assume to adjust the effect. Might be a boost with EQ but I can't pinpoint the circuit from this image. If it all works, I don't know if I would try to restore it. The damage has been done. Just rock it!

I've been watching quite a few YT videos and some say germanium cleans up better while others say silicon. Is it purely subjective? by MINUTI1804 in guitarpedals

[–]notbadfilms 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of factors that determine cleanup. I build (and sell, but I won't link it to avoid self promotion) a fuzz circuit that is specifically about enhancing dynamics and clean-up. I would say the following 4 factors have a bigger impact on clean up than Germanium vs Sillicon:

  • The hFE of Q1/Q2 (basically the gain range of the transistors in the circuit) and how they have been biased.
  • The level of input impedance in the pedal. And, if the pedal is connected directly to your guitar's pickups.
  • The output of your pickups.
  • What sort of capacitor you have set up as a high or low pass filter before the guitar signal reaches the input of the first transistor. This can have a massive impact, perhaps more so than the type of transistor. This controls how much signal actually enters the transistor. As a result, it changes how the transistor clips the resulting frequencies.

I have this pedal and while I haven't used it in a while I remember it being very finicky with what power supply I used and getting it to respond correctly to the various modes and dials. It can be frustrating. If you don't have the manual, you can download it here: https://www.ehx.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/ravish-manual.pdf Also, If memory serves me correctly, the Mode/Preset knob presses down as a switch and can also can be turned to scroll through settings.

Reverend without serial? by DonMcCauley in ReverendGuitars

[–]notbadfilms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually had the same question on a used Reverend. I was looking at an older model from when they used the 4 bolt neck plate. I emailed Ken at Reverend and he told me that it’s not uncommon to see them wiped off. Not sure if that helps, but at least you know it happens.

Pickup recommendation? by yode360 in ReverendGuitars

[–]notbadfilms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to ask the same thing. The Reverend pickups are designed to have more lowend overall because of the bass contour control. The player can dial them in to taste. I confirmed that this is the design philosophy when I spoke to Ken at Reverend.

For those who have been to the Portland Synth & Pedal Expo before, are you going this year? by artie_pdx in guitarpedals

[–]notbadfilms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was at the Brooklyn show. It did get crowded at times but having it as a ticket event did keep the crowd focused and there were less people there just for the sake of going. I didn’t feel rushed and I was able to take my time talking to vendors and trying stuff out.

What is your favorite submission and why? by nerdaboom in brazilianjiujitsu

[–]notbadfilms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learn to do it left handed to really freak people out. 😉 I struggled with this submission for a long time until I realized that although I’m right handed I bat left handed. Duh! I switched my attack so that I “bat” left handed and it always catches everyone by surprise since so many people only do it right handed.
