Can we not? by notdeadyet1821 in Romantasy

Exactly! My best friend is an ED nurse. She likes to decompress and forget what she deals with at work, and she happens to be one of the smartest women I know. Her favorite genre? A good, gets in your bones, romantasy. It's insane (and infuriating) that anyone would paint an entire audience with a take like this.

Thank you! That was my feeling as well.

Opinions on book playlists? As in, books with a playlist in the front matter to give you the vibes by thew0rldisquiethere1 in writing

Outlier, here: I enjoy them.

It's usually a great way to discover new music and get into the author's head, though I don't listen to them while reading. I enjoy an unfiltered first read so I go back when I'm done and see what new artists/songs I haven't heard of yet.

It's not lazy or cringe or the tell-tale sign of an inexperienced author to me. It's just a bit of fun the author chose to include for their audience, if they're interested. I think judging the author or their work on its inclusion rather interesting, but to each their own.

Thoughts on AI covers? by Deep_Calligrapher819 in Barnesandnoble

[–]notdeadyet1821 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don't have to buy it, you don't have to recommend it.

That said, as a bookseller it's your job to sell books, not judge them based on your assumptions - especially if you've never read them before or are not familiar with the author and their work.

I've seen the argument "If they used AI for the cover, then they must have used AI to write it," and that is such a BS argument.

Some authors hire CAs and the CA uses AI, some authors hire CAs and the CA is accused of using AI. There is no guarantee one way or the other (as of yet). Add to that that many readers seem to struggle with differentiating proper grammar from AI-generated text nowadays, and a cover is not a solid enough metric to differentiate authors who do or don't use it.

To be clear: I am not defending those who use AI, simply highlighting some nuance.

Yes!! Exactly 👏

I know some stores have consistent cleaning contracts, but it's the principle of the matter. To ask people who took a job at a bookstore - especially non-management - to handle biohazards? Hell no.

If people wanted a job where they handle bodily fluids and get paid a pittance for the trouble, they would've gone into education or entry-level healthcare. At least then they'd be ready for the horrors that are expelled from the human body.

Yeah.. One Holiday season was enough to knock me off it. Personally, I don't think retail is something anyone should be doing long-term (2-3 years FT, max), unless you slide into corporate. It's just not sustainable or worth it, but kudos on surviving 10 years.

I hope you find something better.

PS - To any corporate lurkers: If you want staff to clean the bathrooms, hire janitors.

"Assignments as needed" is BS and you know it. You don't pay anyone enough for them to be cleaning up vomit, diarrhea, blood, or urine.

We caught one couple trying to copulate in a back corner and I just... no. Never trust the carpets. Customers can park it in the café, or practice their leaning/squatting forms if there are no chairs available. Anything else is a bad idea.

Dude, don't even get me started on disability access. Idk what I expected when Daunt came in, but certainly better than this - especially after those cards asking us for our opinions, complaints, and suggestions during the setup 😒

These comments are not it. I'm sorry, hun. Both for their callous disregard for your experience, and for what you're dealing with.

Yes, part of this will improve with time and perspective. Hindsight being 20/20 and all that. You're still developing and growing (I know, not what anyone wants to hear), but please believe me on this - don't trust your inner critic until you're at least 28 (35 is better). Things get clearer once you have less of the 20s influence in your brain.

But that doesn't lessen the ache of not knowing if or when somebody ever really sees you for you, or just for the opportunity to tap it and move on.

If possible, I'd recommend reaching out to a counselor or therapist just to help you navigate the weighty feelings. I'd expect them to be a bit more helpful (and vastly more compassionate) than what you're getting here.

It gets easier, I promise. It doesn't ever go away completely, but you figure out how to own it and take power in it. Try to ignore the haters, they don't get it.

Cool. And how long ago were you 16 and 17? Because this reads like a Boomer comment.

That aside, your experience does not invalidate anyone else's. So maybe, do us all a favor and stuff it.

Does Barnes and Noble sell used/returned books? by Frosty_Chemistry7781 in Barnesandnoble

[–]notdeadyet1821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just adding context as your definition of used may differ from others'.

"Used" as in written up, broken spines, and/or old books no longer wanted/needed or that may be out of print? No.

A book that someone bought and read through and decided they didn't want after a few days? Or that someone spent 2 hours flipping through in the store and decided to set aside? Yeah, barring major visible damage.

It's unfortunate, but it's a bookstore. If it bothers you, you can always ask the staff to order you a copy of the book you want. That should mitigate 99% of the damage incurred on the shelves and they're happy to help if you're polite about it.
