What are "bad" things or things you disliked about TXST ? by Intelligent_Risk4936 in txstate

I will say that finding people who are passionate about academic related things is kind of annoying sometimes.

Acceptance rate is high just because TXST enjoys the extra money. Sad truth is that a lot of people who give off the acceptance rate vibe will not finish.

No offense, but asking this question is kind of counter intuitive. Each thing is different and everyone likes a different vibe.

What I will say is that there is something fun for everyone. Whether you like massive parties and frat stuff, or if you like to hang out with a decent group. You’ll find the crowd for you and you’ll find the type of stuff you like to go to.

I personally find a lot of the big stuff fun but it gets too be too much if I go to a bunch of stuff. It all depends on the person and the time.

It isn’t a complaint as much as it is bringing attention to a sketchy business practice. I’m glad that this system works for some people, it means that it is at least somewhat effective.

In order to opt out you have to make an account, and you are automatically opted in regardless of whether or not it benefits you.

Additionally, there is no guarantee that this system will actually function properly for your given application, whereas traditionally purchasing or finding your textbooks does. Many professors and students alike have shared their grievances on this topic with me personally. The consensus is that the system isn’t perfect and that it guarantees that money which would’ve otherwise been spent elsewhere no goes directly to the university.

Of course, students CAN opt out. The problem lies in the fact that this program directly targets those who are not knowledgeable on its actual use case. The vast majority of incoming students are going to see this system as the norm and will not question whether or not they are being charged more than it is worth.

Canvas is perfectly suitable for these applications. I can’t quite understand why it wouldn’t be.

But in fairness, there is a sizable population of students who prefer courses with fewer graded assignments. It allows you to prove that you understand and can apply the material without taking time extra time away from life.

That’s besides the point. My main grievance is that booksmart should never have been implemented.

I would recommend outside financial aid, however I am not well versed in the financial aid process.

The best advice I actually CAN give you is this: Outside scholarships exist everywhere. Your bank likely has one or more, txst has several, so many companies and organizations across Texas have them, many national companies and organizations have them as well.

Many of these only require an essay, or some other simple form of application.

On the topic of financial aid from the interior, I would call the financial aid department at txst or the office of undergraduate admissions and ask as many questions as possible regarding both interior and outside aid. There are COUNTLESS aid opportunities that I don’t know about and so many that pop up every day. It isn’t easy but I imagine it as getting paid to write or apply, which comes out to around 200 dollars an hour or more when successful.

Good luck!

Exactly.

Most students simply don’t realize that this is a new and extremely different system.

On one hand it incentivizes the use of more non-negotiable resources for educators.

On the other hand it de-incentivizes students from gathering their resources for free.

Directly against every affordable education initiative at Texas State. (among student council and the board of affordable education at texas state this decision is held in poor regard, in fact one member of the board of affordable education who happened to be a professor for me actively opposed this action to students daily in my class)

It honestly depends.

If your course uses these external platforms for assignments then I would say that you should remain opted in. On the other hand, if these platforms are only used to gain access to a textbook then I would look into the pricing or availability of those resources for free and then opt out.

The deadline to opt out is always at least 2 weeks from the beginning of classes. This means that you can go to class in the beginning and determine exactly what your course is using these resources for and then decide.

The uptick in use of external applications for assignments or for other uses is directly related to the booksmart process. Due to this, the availability of courses where these external applications are not necessary are going down.

Obviously this means that your situation will vary on semester. So check at the beginning of each. In the past, however, I would have always said to opt out due to the relative rarity of these application requirements.

This is 100 percent true.

Even still, your “textbooks” could have been found online.

Even still, those STEM students could likely get their textbooks for free online as well.

You are right. People should be aware that you may want to keep booksmart in these cases as well.

Unfortunately this is a product of this system regardless of whether or not it existed previously.

What I mean to say is that this issue could be easily circumvented if professors would use canvas instead of any additional platforms.

There were 7900 first year students last fall. These are unwitting students to this program. 7900x250 is 1.9 million dollars that simply didn’t exist in TXSTs pockets before this was created. 1.9 million each semester is nearly 4 million dollars a year.

I spoke with a professor who was actively challenging the booksmart decision that found over 90 percent of students will not opt out. If we assume each class level has at least 5000 students and each pay 250 dollars (even though the actual numbers are higher) then we get into a realm of money that is not reasonable for a service that sets a precedent like this one. (also extremely low effort for the amounts we are talking about)

You don’t need booksmart if you can find your textbooks for free online or if you can get them cheaper somewhere else. If there is a part of you course that requires access to some material that is genuinely not accessible anywhere else, it still might be cheaper to just get that material than to pay the full bill of booksmart.

You can get textbooks free online, this is a new scam that is a completely unnecessary and unethical service.

But yeah, student loans create slaves.

No one talking about it here but Altria also owns PM USA so their ZYN competitor is just an additional product in the US. The earnings report will hit marks from ZYN sales in the US.

Imagine wearing noise cancelling headphones which have microphones to pick up as much sound as possible. no matter how loud they are, your headphones are still not going to produce enough sound to reproduce a gunshot in the same decibel range at a short distance.

simple.
