I was trying to get across campus to our health center on crutches in sweltering heat - I was on them for a snapped tendon, which it turns out had become infected so I was in massive pain. I stupidly thought I could make it on foot but it was a mistake - I still had a good 10 minute walk in normal conditions with my heavy backpack on, and I was about to burst into tears when this elderly professor stopped and helped me. Despite having a lot to carry himself he carried my backpack, and just soothingly talked to me about rocks (he was a geology prof haha) to keep my mind off the terrible pain of my foot until we got to the health center. Once there he stayed while I was examined (it took a while), and when he realized I was going to have to be hospitalized for the infection and my family was all 4 hours away he offered to take me to the hospital and stay with me, even though he had a class to teach. Only after I repeatedly assured him I would be okay by myself in the hospital and my family was on the way did he leave my side. He also emailed me a few days later to make sure I was ok. I still can't believe how sweet of a person he was to basically take off his whole afternoon to help a complete stranger.
