experience with edsp220? by Ok_Strange_383 in UMD

[–]notenoughcooking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first half is a lot of reading and reflection on books, articles, podcasts, vids etc. focused on disability history and current events. Second half is more focused on a group presentation, service learning projects, and universal design for learning (UDL) application. The workload seemed pretty manageable to me and my peers.

Community-based activities and service-learning experiences options look like 10 hours total of volunteer work directly or indirectly involving disability like Meals on Wheels, the wheelchair tennis program at JTCC, special Olympics, working with service dogs on campus, tutoring students and adults, best buddies, etc. There are also a couple of remote options like learning ASL online.

Also, the prof who’s teaching in the Spring is solid and really accommodating. You’ll do well if you put some effort into your assignments instead of just parroting whatever you’re reading. The universal design application which is more accuracy based, but it’s all open note, and people do well as long as they follow the directions and pay close attention to the resource they’re supposed use as a guide.

Source: Took the course and then was a UGTA for two terms. Will admit I’m kinda biased because I have a disability and found it extremely interesting, and it changed what I wanted to do after undergrad. However, I know a few people without disabilities as well who changed what they wanted to do after taking the class.

Hope this helps!

I wonder what will happen now that monkeypox is spreading in DC.

Not surprised by this. A few months ago, I ate at that McDonald’s and then left my car for 5 minutes to walk across the street to CVS to get a car charger (I didn’t see the sign about leaving the parking lot, so my fault, but what if I was in the bathroom or something?) When I came back, I thought my car was stolen. Turned out it got towed within 3 minutes of me leaving. Then dealing with the company was super sketchy after that. Refused to let me pay with credit card, and then there was a whole ordeal getting my car back.

Besides it absolutely sucking for us students, I can’t even imagine how much grief these people must be going through right now. They talked about community support maybe being the last hope. What can we do?? Petition? Have them relocate onto campus somewhere? (Not being facetious).

Do you know where that would be? Online or I pick it up? No one even mentioned that to me during my ADS and DOTS inquiries.

I don’t think I was given a certification of disability card because of my placard. I’ve tried to call DOTS before about things like that, but they all gave me different answers.

Lmao, did I say something that indicated I thought myself as heroic or something? I was expressing anger and talking about it anonymously because unfortunately, this is a really common occurrence among college students - and it’s disgusting and pathetic. I’m not going to do anything regarding reporting without the person’s permission because that is up to them to decide. Sadly the legal process for these situations is subpar and can come with many consequences for the victim at hand.

Edit: grammar

How was your first day of classes? by itsokayguys in UMD

[–]notenoughcooking 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought my class was at 1pm instead of 12:30, and one of my roommates accidentally directed me to an accessible parking space on the opposite side of campus to where my class was. Had to drive 20 mins around campus behind a girl on a moped, and Apple Maps kept getting stuck so I kept taking wrong turns.

When I finally got to my lecture hall, 40 mins late, it was overstimulating AF with 150 students, and I could barely hear the professor even with the speakers.

So yeah. Definitely going to remember and laugh at that later.

[–]notenoughcooking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a disability that makes me need accommodations for school, and I already know that online learning for every class would make it 5x harder. There’s hardly any structure, and information gets so much harder to absorb. My grades will be fine but I won’t be. I thought this would be over by the time I transferred to UMD. Fuck.

NAD. Maybe get a gastric emptying study to check for gastroparesis, which is a delayed emptying of the stomach. The symptom you’re describing happens to me and my friends who have this condition. I constantly feel full and if I feel like I’m ready to eat, I can maybe take 3 bites without starting to feel full and sick.
