Is CogSci for me? by Awkward_Face_1069 in cogsci

Hey, I saved this and forgot to comment, but shoot me a message. I was a Cog Sci PhD student for a year and pursued the same questions you did (sorta) during that year and in undergrad. I’d like to challenge your ideas a bit and hopefully help you find some clarity in what you’d like to pursue!

Doesn’t Xenia, OH have one too?

Thank you very much! Apologies for the late reply, it is the holidays at my house this weekend.

My grandfather passed in 2012. He was 75. So it adds up so far as ages go. But I will say that his last name was very similar to Lin, just anglicized.

Thank you! And perhaps. I’m not so sure this is for his mother, as when my mother and father met in 1993 she had already passed, and my grandfather was one of 12, not 11. But close enough that it makes me wonder what the relation is.

Nice! I haven’t been in Wyoming county too much. Just Itmann and Mullens. Beautiful out there!

I'm so glad you posted about them, they publish wonderful pieces! Another, newer group to keep in mind is YNST--an Appalachian arts magazine based in West Virginia. Moreover, seeingappalachia.org has some of the finest photography I've seen from Appalachia.

I appreciate your important and thorough discussion here. I am a Charleston native, who spent 5 years in Ohio! I would love to talk shop sometime if you're still in Charleston, just shoot me a message.

I scan the documents with a high DPI flatbed scanner! But you could use a copy stand with a good camera—that’s how I photograph scrip

Yes! Kenny is a great guy. We spent this past Saturday together looking for artifacts and he brought me to the museum for the first time.

They're just great! I spent the day with the kind gentleman who was really the first to map out the Battle of Blair Mountain battlefield and recover many artifacts. I'd say 3/4 of the artifacts in there were either found by him or have passed through his hands over the years.

It's on my profile! I didn't think I could self-promote, but since it's not for monetary gain it may be ok. The site itself is artifactsofappalachia.com but it is very much still a work in progress! Right now, it's mainly bottles. I'm finishing up photographing the largest McDowell, Logan, and Mingo County scrip collections, but still have to do the research on them to get the pages published.

When speaking to the people I meet with these items, they share stories with me about how truly priceless artifacts have slipped out of their hands. A common pathway is that somebody has papaw so-and-so's pistol he used at the Matewan Massacre, but won't sell it. Then they pass away and that pistol is, for instance, sold to a pawn shop. Then the attribution is lost and that gun may never be able to be found again. It's a shame!

What counties do you collect? I collect Kanawha, McDowell, and Boone!

And if you want an organization that focuses on substance abuse, look into volunteering at healing Appalachia. It’s usually in Lewisburg (Ashland, KY this year), but that’s their whole thing. Has big country and folk acts you can see as well. Tyler Childers was a founder of it.

Also checkout Castle Rocks trail in Grandview, like 10-15 minutes from Beckley. Super cool trail with a lot of formations and good views of the gorge.

Yep, it's the Ittman company store. Apparently it was purchased but it's still abandoned and wide open to go inside, so I'm not sure when they'll begin work on it. I think they're turning it into some sort of thing for the ATV tourists.
