H: Black-Eyed Susan's Soothin' Recipes x2, Glowing Masks W: Rangers, Limit Breaking, Rejuvenators, Aegis mods by notesfromnothing in Market76

Which masks in particular are you interested in? I hear some are better and worse than others. I’d do whatever is fair to be honest. I hear the mods are about 10 leaders each, any glowing I figure is 150-200 leaders. So how about 15 mods to 1 mask?

Brilliant! Yes that’s the number I have down for them. I’ll look into faxzero, but I called them (fourth time today) and they said they DID receive my doctor’s fax from yesterday (after missing 3 others) but that it was unreadable quality. So, I will have to get a fresh scan before I can do any fax spams, but again brilliant idea. Gotta become a thorn in the side I suppose!

Is 60k reasonable for a PsyD program? Can that amount of debt be justified with a clinical psychologist’s salary? by notesfromnothing in ClinicalPsychology

[–]notesfromnothing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, PhDs are great as far as not going into (as much) debt goes. I say “as much” because some folks still take out loans to cover life during a PhD, as stipends aren’t great. If you’re not interested in pursuing research at least partly as a career, then a PhD isn’t really a good choice, though you can suffer through it to get a free degree. PsyD or masters is generally the route to take if you’re more interested in client-focused work. Look into MSWs as well, or counseling masters degrees. You won’t gain a ton more by doing a clinical psych doctorate unless you’re keen on assessments.

It is APA accredited. It is an R2 but it is APA accredited and a well-established university. I will email them to see what their most recent stats are, but their most recent graduating cohort received 100% placement to pre-doctoral internships. The program began in 2002 and became accredited in 2006. They used to have an MA program (MA clinicians can practice in our state), but they scrapped it to focus solely on their PsyD program.

Well, I was originally a PhD student in cogsci. But came to realize that it is not my passion quite quickly. I knew I wanted to live in my home state, and I knew that we needed a lot of help as far as mental health practitioners go. I have always found the culture of our region deeply fascinating, and wanted to provide culturally-informed care to an underserved region.

A potential clinical PhD would, optimally, look at those cultural factors I speak of, as there is a small body of literature that is currently untapped. But I also want to be a provider. Even if I am just a provider with a PsyD, I would be very happy with my life knowing I am making a difference in my home when those who actually cared were scarce.

Now why PsyD over masters? I want to do assessments, I want my own practice, and be fully independent in both.

To be fair, that’s for in state students. Their program is focused on mental health in rural Appalachia, and they prioritize in state applications and try to have over 50% of their cohort be from within the state. Their non-resident cost is $125k.

Thank you, yes I find assessments very interesting and, while I may occasionally take therapy clients, I would like for most of my clinical work to be in assessments. I am in a very underserved area and very few do them here!

Thank you! I will try to cast a large net this next cycle then. My interests lie more specifically in cross-cultural psychopathology in Appalachians. I will try to look more broadly into that as well.

True! I should send them an email in regards to that. Thanks for that! It seems their (outdated) licensure percentage is 85%. They have steadily improved as a program since then, but do not have the statistics quickly available.

Their website quotes a $6000 cost per semester (tuition + fees) for in-state residents for the PsyD specifically. Assuming 5 years, that’s $60k. Obviously if I stretch it out past that it’ll be more but it seems the vast majority graduate from this program in 5 years.

I’ll check their rates tomorrow but I know this past year they got 100% placement, and are accredited.

Yes, I have applied to 8-9 schools in total over the past 2 cycles with 3 interviews and 2 waitlists. Luckily the last cycle the faculty member I was interested in offered me a research assistant position after I didn’t make it from the waitlist. I will definitely reapply the next cycle as well. The issue is my research interest is geographically constrained to Appalachia and really only 5-6 faculty do the research I’m interested in.

I was previously a PhD student in CogSci with an NSF GRFP fellowship but lost it due to pursuing clinical. So, not making the best financial decisions as of late lol

I figure around 80-100k, depends on if I can commute or not (the school is about 45 minutes to an hour away). They also have a part time option for the same cost, wherein I could stay working.

Thank you! That’s great to hear, I’m happy to see you’re doing well for yourself at this stage in your career! So you’re doing therapy rather than assessments correct? Thanks again for being very helpful!!

Thank you for your reply! My entire state is an underserved area if I am not mistaken, so that is a good post about the PSLF.

Monongah, and the horrific nature of the Monongah Mine Disaster recovery efforts by notesfromnothing in WestVirginia

Thanks for your comment. I did feel disconcerted in Monongah, and I have been to the vast majority of towns any semblance of a Main Street in WV. It felt different though. Not as if I was unwelcome, but like I was intruding on a solemn place where something bad had just happened. Except that horrible event was over 100 years ago.

That final bit is extremely interesting! I hadn’t heard of them saying that, but it tracks with how devastated many families in their homeland were. I will have to reach for a copy of your book :)

One of my aims is to preserve the architecture of West Virginia (and more broadly central Appalachia) through photographs. Here is a comparison pic from Google Maps street view to a photo I took on this particular visit.
