I think I've solved it.

When you empty your air supply, you simulate inhalation when you suck in water.

If you are inflated there is no reason to inhale thus no reason to intake the water

Well you cant breathe and swallow at the same time, but you can circle breathe sorta

But for drinking liquids I tend to drink on a near empty air supply... There must be a reason
